John, I just started reloading for a .338 RCM I got in a trade. Your Gun Gack I book contains a load using a 225 gn Nosler Partition with Ramshot Big Game powder that I would like to duplicate. Here's my question, Did you crimp the cartridge case into the bullet? The reason I'm asking is that my Hornady Manual states that the .338 RCM should be crimped due to the substantial recoil and the Partition bullet has no cannelure.

I'm not Mule Deer, but I can answer your question. Use Lee Factory Crimp dies to crimp your ammo. I have them for about every chambering I load. In addition to keeping bullets in place during recoil, crimping helps accuracy by making neck tension uniform. There is no need for a cannelure on your bullets when using Lee Factory Crimp dies.

When I was new to handloading I read that statement from Lee also and promptly purchased Lee Factory crimp dies for my 7mm-08 and 338F. In both rifles, using the Lee Factory crimp die degraded accuracy (not a lot), and subsequent load development could never equal the performance of not crimping. The Lee crimp dies were subsequently discarded.

kalbrecht,

No, I did not crimp any of the .338 RCM loads listed, and experienced no difficulties. In fact I haven't crimped any rifle handloads in the .338 Winchester Magnum (a far harder recoiling round than the .338 RCM), with the same result.

Thanks John, that's been my experience also.
