Who remembers this? I think we all did it. The famous scene is from that dippy movie Home Alone. Now the news had a kid who did it. That is not the bad part, that is that it took the AMBULANCE 15 minutes to get there. Doesn't anyone know a cup of warm water will release you?

Early one frosty morning when I was waiting on the school bus I froze my tongue to the mailbox. I snatched it off & in the process removed a patch of my tongue. Hurt like a sumbidge. I was about 8 years old maybe. That was 50-some-odd years ago & I never told anybody until now.
Y'all ain't gonna tell on me are ya ?

This comes from the movie "A Christmas Story". Happened during the "Triple Dog Dare" scene. Yes, warm/hot water is the best solution!

Tried that one frigid morning probably about 60 years ago..... But not for long. Pulled my tongue away just before it got frozen on real good. Just a little sting as it released but it taught me not to try it again. I'd heard of kids getting their tongues frozen on to things like that so I was afraid to leave it on there, but I'd also heard about the warm water "release agent".

This AM on one of the lib media morning shows, Robin Roberts said of the event, "How many times do we have to tell people, do not try this at home"? Really?
Then, Ginger Zee has to come on and give the scientific explanation of how one's tongue freezes to metal in subfreezing temperatures.

Yesterday, one of our local geniuses on noontime news explained to us that the coast is at sea level.

Where do they find these mental giants?

I have had my fingers temporarily frozen to many metal objects during the course of a days work. Never was foolish enough to put my tongue in such a place.

As a kid I froze my tongue to an aluminum ice cube tray, didn't know about the hot water release. Pulled my tongue free leaving a patch of it on the ice tray, it hurt enough to teach me never to try it again.

Hell, I did it this morning!

I have a cart filled with firewood at the door, and today marked as a refill day. Only the plastic tarp I have over it was frozen to the tongue of the trailer...not much...but more than I wanted to pull and risk tearing it.

So I get down on my knees to blow on the affected area, and I'll be durned if my bottom lip doesn't touch the metal and sticks. I blew and it came off with minimal damage. Guess the kid in me is alive and well.

I think we all did it.

Lets not be all inclusive on this. Fingers to objects at times as a matter of utility, but would never fall for the triple dog dare.

Five degrees out this AM, and I'd never consider licking my maul, axe, or any metal object.

Never did it to a pole, but got my lips and tongue stuck to my sled once while sleigh riding! Just sucked it up and pulled them off! Of course I lost a bit of hide and they bled, but I wasn't missing my turn down the hill, added a bit of color in spots.......

We all did it when I was grade schooler in WY. Our teachers kept warm water at the ready at all times.
