After taking delivery of my Sako. I now feel that the factory Ruger trigger is, well, terrible. I'm not looking to dump a ton of $$ here. I seem to remember seeing a couple of piece/parts trigger upgrades that were praised as highly effective. Any suggestions?

The easiest fix, and least expensive, for the trigger is to install and aftermarket hammer. I like Power Custom hammers. No need changing the sear as the factory sear is fine. You'll end up with a pull weight at 2 1/2 pounds, + or - an ounce or two. You can progress from there with other trigger improving, but the hammer change will do ya.

Is it true that they are about 7# from the factory? Mine would be a mid 90's model with the barrel clamp. It sure feels heavy, but then after shooting the Sako set trigger everything is heavy. I think I'm going to forgo using the set trigger for a while rather than getting spoiled...

7 pounds is about right. You get a big improvement from just the hammer change.

The trigger return spring adds weight to the pull. Change springs or cut that spring down. Some use the spring in an ink pen. Also you can reverse the trigger return spring and pin so that the spring rests against the trigger not the pin. That alone removed 2 ozs on my 10/22. Shortening or switching the trigger return spring will lower pull by 6-8 ozs. Also the hammer spring can be cut down a coil or so to lower the pull to around 29ozs in conjunction with the PC hammer and other mods. Don't cut too much off the hammer spring or you'll get fail to fires. By just adding the hammer on my two 10/22s I got a 41 oz pull on one and a 57 oz pull on the other. To get a 29 oz pull you need to do several things in addition to adding the PC hammer. I discussed several of them above.

If you go to rimfirecentral.com do a search for "bobby pin trick"
you will find a free way to get the factory trigger down to about 3 lbs. Its real easy and only takes about 15 min's.

I ordered the Volquartsen target hammer for starters. We'll see how that works. Reviews have been excellent from what I've seen.

Problem solved.

I use the Volquartsen in one of my 10-22's and it is very good, clean crisp letoff at 2 pounds every time. Price for Volquartsen is a bit more that others. i have installed Clark and Power Custom in other rifles and find them all to be a major improvement. I have also worked on stock Ruger but could never get one down below 4 lbs that I felt safe with. I am sure there are ways to get below 4 lbs safely but that is where I stopped.
