Anyone using a 358 based on the .284 Winchester case for a short action "Whelen"? Rusty

I thought about one of these many years ago, but in the end just built a short action 700 standard 358. Do not think anything I killed with that rifle knew the difference. The 358 punches above it's weight class imo.

sorta, got one based on a left handed 700. only used sierra 225 grain bullets. first ones I tried, they were accurate and killed deer so I kept at it. never tried anything heavier or lighter so I cant comment on how it parallels the whelen.

Shooter, did you use a long or short action for your build? I am a lefty shooter also.

I built a 375-284 (vs 358-284, 338-284, etc) mainly due to the fact that I had an "intermediate" VZ24 action and a railroad car of .375" 270 RN blem bullets. I like it.

im shooting a nula 338x284 and love it. model 20 with a 22 inch barrel. 160 barnes ttsx at 3450fps and 200gr speer hot cores at 2950fps absolute killers. I also have a ula model 20 in 25x284 and it shoots lights out. 3050fps with 115 nos bts and 3350fps with 85 nos bts from a 20 inch barrel. anything off of the 284 case is awesome from my experience. the 358x284 is probably a hammer

How would a .358-.284 compare to the 350 RemMag?

Likely pretty close as the 350 mag is pretty comparable to 30 06 capacity and so is the 284.

I built it on a short action Remington action I picked up somewhere. I had Ray Montgomery do the barrel as he had the reamer and I didn't.
as soon as I get more unpacked, we recently moved, it will be up for sale so the dies can go with it.

I had 2 of them, Remington 722 and Savage 99C. The short action limited the bullets that would work through the magazine. I sold the barrels, dies, and finish reamer to a guy who had been bitten by the 284 wildcat bug.

Rusty,
You might want to consider a 358 based on the 338 Ruger Compact Magnum. Non rebated rim, 30 degree shoulder, short action friendly and a standard mag .532" bolt face. With the recent development of the 6.5 PRC brass should be available. Just some food for thought...
