If they made it with an inch longer main tube I would be quite comfortable going that way.

They don't.

Leupold M8 4X.
Set for life as I stocked up with ten or so of them over the years.

Some variation on the Leupold fixed 6 depending on gun.

It’s really a toss up for me between a Swaro Z3 3-10x42 and the new Leupold VX3i 3.5-10x40. I like the 42mm objective but the eye relief on those new Leupold s is something else.

I just hunt with my rifles, targets are just practice and load development.

Tough choice for me given my two OLD favorites: Zeiss Diavari 6x or, SB 8x56.

Given that I am older and need more magnification: My SB fixed 8x56 (I know, they don't make them anymore!)

Happy Birthday, Cariboujack. Yeah, I've had a pile of the Leupold 2.5-8s and I agree dollar for dollar they represent a significant value.

I’d want it somewhat light, 14-18 oz’s.

Side focus for parallax. If it’s my only scope, it’s gonna do everything from up close rimfire to long range fun gunning.

I’m thinking variable for the same reason. Low end maybe 4ish. Top end, 12-16ish seems reasonable.

Low profile elevation turret marked in mil. Zero stop. Low pro capped windage.

FFP reticle. Marked every half mil, dash and dot.

Long mounting surface.

The March above has a lot going for it. Thats a monster in a reasonably compact package.

I can’t even settle on “the” one scope per each particular rifle.

The 42mm objective March scopes are said to suffer from a finicky eyebox. This is understandable given the design. It’s always a give and take. Even a 25x optic with a 56mm objective suffers compromised low light performance.
