If a North American hunter were to eschew all others in favor of one 35 Whelen for his hunting, what would he lack? I'm thinking along the lines of the 375 H&H in Africa which some there use to the exclusion of everything else. The Whelen's undoing is mechanical,in that it only has Dog Schit bullets available to it. A 338-06 built with a shred of sense,in regards to throat, twist and COAL latitude, will simply blow it outta the fhuqking water. Though in fairness...the Whelen is apparently hell on Forked-horns. I would tend to think Whelen ammo wouldn't be hard to come by? Maybe in the Western states perhaps but it should certainly be a mainstay in Alaska.
When you get off the plane, your ride to the game fields is waiting for you, and the airline can't find the bag with your ammo, that's when you see the big difference between 35 Whelen factory ammo and GOOD 35 Whelen factory ammo. With a 270, 308, or 30-06, you can nearly always find something that works and works well, whether you're in the timber or need to reach out across a pasture or clear cut. Far fewer places stock 35 Whelen ammo, and then it's often just a few boxes of 250-grain Remington round-nose CoreLokts that clock 2,300 fps in most rifles and don't always shoot well in a 1:16 barrel, which is the most common factory twist. With that load, the claims of the 35 Whelen being a viable 400-yard deer gun get a lot harder to support. Okie John The 250 grain Remingtons are pointed soft points not round nose and my 1:14" Whelen loves them trajectory not withstanding.

Have you shot any game with a 180 gr. bullet @ 2900 fps? When considering 180 gr. bullets for whitetail I was advised that the bullet was designed for .35 Rem. velocities not to load it to anything higher. No, 200 gr is the lightest i've killed deer with. Just commenting that it can reach out there if needed. I also find it very manageable in recoil.

I've used a 35 Whelen a lot. Nosler 225 grain Accubonds do the business out to 500 yards easy. Pair it with a SWFA 6X and run your drops and you are good to go.

Have seen 'em killed with everything from 22LR to 416Wby...none of which makes a fhuqk, nor grants a Whelen the mechanical prospects to hang with the .338" version of same.

Beautiful bear. I'm with Jim, what the hell did it weigh? What kind of ammo?
This thread has been helpful to me. I'm thinking about buying this Ruger #1 in 35 Whelen that my son saw at a local gun show about a month ago. The guy is checking to see if he still has it. They want $950.00 for it and my son says the wood is beautiful. It would be my first #1 and my first 35 Whelen. I don't reload, so I'm trying to figure out what kind of factory ammo to shoot. I like Barnes TTSX in other rifles, so I was thinking about 200gr. in this. For now, it would be on whitetails, but in the future, who knows. What say you?

I have hunted with a 35 Whelen since the 80s. Mine is accurate and puts animals on the ground quickly usually where they are standing when I shot. It doesn't bloodshot the front end of the deer or hog like smaller faster bullets do. I use it where the range is appropriate but have killed a deer with it at 325 yds that someone else crippled. I have several other rifles that I use but the whelen if my favorite.

It worked pretty good on this moose. Old 275 grain Hornady round nose. Didn't recovered the bullet. Called him in to about 30-35 yards. The way he was coming I 'm pretty sure I could have waited and he would have been in my lap. My 35 hasn't gotten a lot of use in recent years since I built my 400 Whelen. This year I hunted with a different rifle every day since I was day hunting from home. It happened to be 35 Whelen day. I love my 400 Whelen but I could be happy if the 35 Whelen was my only big game rifle.
Chronographs, bore scopes and pattern boards have broke a lot of hearts.
