25classic: I own many Remington 700 Classic Rifles and do indeed value them dearly. Virtually every one I own shoots better than a semi-lightweight sporter Rifle should. I own them in calibers from 17 Remington on up through 7m/m Remington Magnum. My Remington 700 Classic in 223 Remington is no exception - it shoots very well indeed. Last sight-in verification I did with it produced a 3 shot group at 100 yards measuring .251"! Yeah try and do that with most of todays semi-lightweight sporter Rifles! The last five shot group I shot with that Rifle, and that handload (made by me with Nosler 50 gr. Ballistic Tips!), measured .659" there at 100 yards. I have a Leupold 4x12 variable scope on it. I have two Remington 700 Classics in caliber 222 Remington and they shoot extremely well also! I don't know maybe Remington was using fresh new tools to make their chambers and barrels back then? To my last point - some years after acquiring my first 223 Remington Classic I came across a beautifully stocked Remington 700 Classic in 223 Remington for a pleasing price at a gunshow! I jumped on it like a Goose on a Junebug! Imagine my disgust and nausea (I nearly vomited!) when I turned the Rifle over and it had the dreaded and disgusting "J" lock on it! So it is my contention that SOME Remington 700 Classics in caliber 223 Remington DO indeed have the horrific "J" locks on them. I am glad this poster's (25classic) Rifle does NOT have the "J" lock! By the way how many rounds do you figure are down the barrel? TIA BTT Good luck in your sale. Hold into the wind VarmintGuy
If I had to guess I would say under 250 rounds down the barrel. Killed a few deer with it then moved on to 6X45 and 6br Norma and quit shooting this rifle.
