Hey, so I traded in my savage mark 2 .22 bolt action rifle for this thing and I'd like to know if you folks would be able to help me in the identification of this piece. Pictures of my rifle can be seen below: https://imgur.com/a/tXNGF6dhttps://imgur.com/a/WoseZRJnotes: I don't understand why mine's the only one to have this peep sight? Is this just a custom mod?? Also, why is there an m above my lever and when i take down my barrel? serial number is #283846 the barrel is 24 inches btw Can anyone help my identify the approximate value of this thing in either canadian or american dollars? P.S: Thanks to everyone that has checked out my post and has given me some credible info in advance! So sorry about the messiness of my room, but if you folks have any information and can provide me with any sort of value for the rifle I would be glad to know. Thanks for you time and I hope you all have a wonderful day ^

That's cool. Therr's another Savage 99 website that has a picture of a 99 with a Climin Lyman reveiver sight. I don't think Lyman actually made any of these for the 99 but I always thought the had a certain air of cool. Looks like you may have a pre-war 99G that was made in the 20s. The rear dovetail sight was a score too.

Your best bet would be going on auction sites and looking at 99Gs. It doesn't look in bad shape but there are some issues to consider. One being the biff in the stock behind the receiver on the right side. Is that a hole?
I will say that if you did a straight trade for this with a 22 bolt Savage you did good.

its a dent, maybe half an inch deep into the stock The stock is pretty thin right there and I would be careful. I also wouldn't try removing the butt stock until you've had clear direction on how to do so. Savage 99 butt stocks can be notorious for blowing apart if you don't do it right. They have a lot of thin wood.

Go on Gun Broker tonight and do some research and then tomorrow ask the guys if you think your estimate is in the ball park.

Savage 99G with a Lyman 38 sight that was made for a Winchester or Marlin mounted on it. My gut feeling of value would be around $400 ,because of condition and the incorrect Lyman added to it. Heres a picture of one of my Savage rifles with the correct model 21 Lyman made for a Savage on it. Lyman made very few model 21 sights for Savage ,you will see how the sight curve fits the receiver. the lyman sight is worth some money by itself, but doesn't have the correct rear sight mounting lever and screw. The Lyman receiver sights have a letter code stamped on the back telling what rifle maker they were made for. Don

That is the early medium weight barrel with the transition type front sight.

David, I see it also has the unexplained "MP" mark on the takedown barrel. Don

I missed the MP mark. I had a 300G with that mark and it was rumored that it was Canadian mountie rifle. That rumor has since been proved false.

That is very cool! Really diggin' the sight, even if it's not correct. Sorry, being very new to this savage collecting thing myself, I can't help with a value. Just curious, did you trade straight up?

Fix the ding in the stock, re-cut the checkering (arguably an added cost) and that would be a nice 99G regardless of the rear sight and the sling swivels. If you don't mind me asking, how much did you have in the 22 you traded it for?
