Saturday: Detailed the 4Runner inside and out.

Someone else did it, but I walked and picked it up. In the rain.

Uphill both ways?? Carrying 4 x 8 sheets of plywood??

I got back in the gym today after a week off. Felt good, did legs, lower back, and core. Hunting season's right around the corner......

Do not joke about carrying sheetgoods. Of all the things that kicked my ass building the house, the sheetgoods were the worst. Getting the 5/8" ply up on the roof was bad and I thanked my pagan gods every day I pulled it off. The 1-1/8" T&G subfloor was arguably worse. There's just no way to do it that doesn't feel like you're gonna grenade a disc in your back or blow your scapula through your skin... . I didn't, but I'm thinking there was a bit of luck involved. A young man's game and I'll need to learn to back off once I start getting REALLY old, like you guys. whistle

SP.... have I taught you NOTHING?! You could've matched that workout simply by buying a project boat. Sheesh.

That's right, humping heavy plywood up or down a ladder is a recipe for a back injury. It's also something you do for a few days and then stop, unless you're a construction worker.

In other words, not a good way to get in better shape. It's like going to the gym and doing heavy aquats and deadlifts for a few days and then never doing them again.

Well, remember the pretext (context?) here. This was not my first rodeo. From where I sit typing I can see 5 buildings I built. A really neat barn, greenhouse (ok, that one was easy) my first shop/woodshed, my big shop, and the house I'm sitting in. Oops, 6- I tore down the POS wellhouse the property came with a few years ago, poured a new slab, and built a very sweet new BIG wellhouse using "best practices" home construction techniques. On all of them, in fact, I did everything from the concrete work to the roofs. Not to mention all the field fences around the place (now, THAT is a pain in the..... everything), 4 cords of firewood a year since 1991 or whenever it was, cutting in roads with a shovel and keeping them graveled, the cedar fence I just built, etc etc. In other words, I kinda *am* a construction worker, but I'd argue doing it at a NON-daily level is healthier than doing it 40 hours a week. How many 50-something construction workers still move well?

I'll certainly agree most people in their mid-50's shouldn't do it, any more than they should do what Mike is doing virtually daily. But as I've rambled on about more than I should've, I'm not most people. That's not because I'm awesome; I'm not. It's because I've been continuously going at this stuff for pushing 30 years to some degree.

Hmm.... this got me thinking. Two of the physically healthiest, most physically-capable "old guys" I know are contractors. Note that's NOT a construction worker. Contractors are generalists; like with me, the job changes.

Again, I'm in no way arguing against going to the gym or denigrating the hard work therein. Just saying, it's not the only way. And I'll concede that I do take risks that maybe aren't smart as I get <bleep> older.

Kentard, I defy you to find ONE POST I made about Trump before he ran for POTUS. One. Want a hint? You won't.

Stop lying.

And what, you have so little self control you just can't keep yourself from reading a bumped thread? Your momma raised you ALL wrong, son. grin

Besides, I give you alt.snowflakes the whooole Campfire forum as your safe space, except that one thread. I think that's pretty dang respectful of me, actually. You should try that sometime....

It was far beyond "laying" diamond plate and it was in sum not just a workout but a fairly brutal one for the muscle groups I logged. I'll submit you are clueless about the realities of replacing a boat floor, and, just as importantly, the mods I made to the stringer system. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Yesterday was a light day but my biceps and hip flexors are feeling it today. Again, I'll submit that it's been a loooong time, if ever, since the critics have moved 2 cubic yards of sand with a shovel and wheelbarrow over uneven ground. That's not a workout for some body parts? HA! Laffin'. They make fun, but they are empty windbags as far as basing their critique on experience.

Actually, though, it brings up a broader philosophical point.

For coming around on 30 years I've combined my personal DIY compulsions with the fact that I own a good sized rural property into a fundamentally healthy physical lifestyle where the act of getting significant exercise is just a part of daily life. THAT'S the point I'm often trying to make here. When I replaced the roof on my shop recently- which is when I took all that ply up a ladder solo- I accomplished multiple things. I saved about $6k, which is another way of saying I chose to pay myself $6k for the job; I insured the work was done to a high quality standard, because that's how I roll; and finally, to my point here, I got a spectacular amount of all-body exercise over a period of WEEKS. It goes on and on. This is not a new thing; this is my LIFE. And it WORKS. Anyone who meets me sees someone who seems, mentally and physically, like a much younger person. I move well on my feet. My balance is good. I'm cheerful to a fault because I feel good. My core hasn't atrophied away like so many people my age. As I said above, I fear no trail, which is not to say I think I can "out race" people up the mountain, because that's not my thing, but if there's a trail to be hiked, a "mission" as it were, I've completed it. Every single time. I started in with "death marches" when I was single-digits old in the NM deserts. We had enormous freedom as kids. We covered HUGE ground. And as one ages, that mentality of "git 'er done", if applied to daily life, and if that daily life presents the kinds of challenges and opportunities for exercise that mine does, the payoff is cumulative and HUGE.

I'm not in any way saying you can't do this at a gym. I read with some awe the gym workouts guys post here. I hold in very high regard guys who do that, and specifically, what some of the principle posters on this thread do, is amazing. Very cool. But the whole reason to BE on an exercise thread to to inspire each other and hold ourselves accountable. This summer, when I was literally buried in work in my shop for months, I came here and owned the fact that I WASN'T getting excercise. That's holding oneself accountable. But, going backwards here, there are OTHER ways to live a physical life than going to a gym. I think most here have college degrees; I have a couple. That has led most towards a certain type of life. I was lucky to stumble into a whole other way of accomplishing much the same thing, physically, as say someone who has a white-collar type job and then hits the gym. And it's been great. And I am sharing that success story here in much the same way say Mike is sharing his amazing story- which is a transformation into a true badass at an age most (sane, haha) guys are winding down into couchbound obesity! It's inspiring.

Haters gonna hate, and I could literally GAF about that. But even they know I'm speaking the truth here. They're too small to admit it, but they know. That's my "win". For everyone else, keep up the good works, and god DAMN if we are going down without a fight in this life! Right? Right! Use it or lose it. We ain't losing it, not like THAT anyway.

The more you post the stupider you sound... Seriously.....

You moved 18 wheelbarrows worth of material.....whoppdefucking doooooo...

I did that around my pool in an afternoon.

Depending on what size wheelbarrow your Sally ass owns , what 12 to 15 loads?

Awesome dude, You're just awesome.........................................

But that's not what you said, dummy. You said I was following him around for years before the election; implication being I was doing it HERE, or else why say it in response to SP pointing out that you follow me around like a little girl?

The exact opposite is true. I have AVOIDED that human scum since the 80's. It took you guys going full-retard over him to force me to say Thing 1 about him in a post. And even then, I do it on (1) thread out of respect for your little alt.snowflake safe space. Otherwise, you hypersensitive lil' alt.bitches REALLY get whiny.

I'll make you a deal. Get the hell off our exercise thread, and I'll remind you you're being an idiot next time I see you on the Comey thread, to help you wean off it. Deal?

Hell of a long post just to say, "Got no job, never really had one, Had more time than money, was forced to do things has I could, when I could.".
