I just picked up a model 88 in 308. It now has see through mounts on it that I want to replace. Looking to see what you guys have on your guns. Have a redfield widefield to mount in it.

The only one I own now, and hunt with regularly, is a 308 WIN - it has original style Redfield one piece base (turn-in front) and Redfield rings - I think those are sold now under the Weaver name. I used to have a second one in 284 WIN, it had old style, two piece, Weaver slot bases with Burris slot rings. Both systems worked fine.

I have been using model 88's for many years because I like and collect them. One of the best, cheapest, and easiest bases to find is # 53 weaver one piece base. That base will fit a the Win. 88 and Sako Finnwolf rifles. Then just use either Weaver or any other similar rings . If you use the old Weaver rings, just be careful not to over tighten the ring screws. Redfield , Leupold, and Burris are also very good mounting systems.

This is my 308 WIN (picture is ten years old) - same Redfield one piece mount - you can see it pretty decently in this light. I used Medium height rings, work well up to 40mm bells.

My M/88 had Weaver base and rings, wouldn't hesitate to use Weaver again if I were scoping one.

If you use the Weaver #53 base with QR/QD rings, you can use a Lyman 66W88 receiver sight as an auxiliary sight. I have this combination, with Warne Maxima QD rings, on a Winchester 100.

The last Winchester 88 that I shot was a 243 that held an equally old Weaver V7 via a set of vintage Leupold Detacho-Mounts.

"Best" is relative. Some people cannot stand the looks of "plain ole Weaver rings." Others don't mind. Some people want a detach, then return to zero ability. Others haven't taken the scope off the rifle since the day they mounted it and don't plan to. The first thing is to decide what attributes you want in a mounting system.

Redfield widefield scopes can even be mounted in low rings. I typically mount all scopes as low as I can go, especially with older low comb stocked guns. I still think the Weaver #53 base with Weaver rings are tough to beat on an 88. Plus both scope and mounts are vintage as is the gun.

Thanks for the info. That's what I think I'm going to go with. Vintage is key.

[align:center][/align]Annnnnd now for the usual Campfire prompt . . . pictures or in didn't happen!

I always thought 88's were kinda cool, but never enough to own one. Same with Remington pumps in .270, .30-06, etc. Now, if I ever run into a smoking deal on a M64 rifle . . .

Yep, but the see through so small and low as to be impracticable. I lived a few miles from Marbles in the 60's and when my dad got his Model 100 new he went over there and had one put on. I got one 20 years later and found a GG mount to put on mine. Been on there ever since.

The pic below is off the internet. My "see through" tube is round and even smaller diameter than the oblong one in the picture. Solid as a rock.

I just acquired through a trade a Winny 88 that had a scope mounted with Redfield Swing Over mounts in great condition. Very nice but I'm not planning to use them. I know next to nothing about this mount system. Any information anyone can tell me about these would be great. Also, since I have no plans for their use if anyone has a use I'm willing to let them go. Give me a fair offer and they can be yours.
