About 10 yards.

I use a suppressed 7-08 and 140s at 2,800.

I'm interested in the rifle/scopes and technique for the longer shots mentioned. Twiddles, reticle or holdover, sporter or LR rigs?

I practice 'standard' shooting a lot and am happy on deer out to about 275. Would like to extend without getting too hi tec/ heavy etc

From my previous post, 150 ELDX mv 2790, 140 Accubond mv 2850, 140 Partition mv 2880. All Tikkas.

Scope is the Leupold VX-2 3-9x40 CDS. I call them clicky scopes. Laser, consult range card, clicky click, breathe, squeeze. Nothing special, we just practice. A lot.

Just reset the parallax to 250yds. I do that to all my 2.5-8’s and 3.5-10’s (about 10 total) and have no problems with them at short or longer range.

Search the optics forum, and you can find instructions to do it yourself - really easy.

Sure, I’ll shoot further before I make my trip, but just need a little reassurance.

The rifle wears a 2.5-8 VX-3i and I’m shooting 120 gr NBT’s for pronghorn and MD/WT deer.

Should I be looking/planning on a longer range rifle for the future?

Most decent boattail spitzers at speeds over 2,800 will jive well enough with the aiming points in a Leupold with the B&C and LRD reticles. I've set up several and when the 300yd aiming point is on at 300, the 400 is going to be dang close and the crosshair is going to be very close to 200. It is easy to work with and practice with. Put a sticker on the gun/scope somewhere with your dope, such as:

200: Zero
250: -3"
300: 1st Dot
350: 1st Dot +5"
400: 2nd Dot
450: 2nd Dot +7"
500: Picket

That's actually what JBM shows for a 120NBT at 3,050 with a 1.5" scope height, a 200yd zero, and standard atmospheric conditions. Wind calls for 10mph crosswinds can be found there also. Shooting such a setup at 300 and 400 regularly will really help with the practice.

I bought a Vortex with the BDC redical and was happy to find that it is dead on with the ticks in the scope using my 7mm-08 and 140 AB/BT at 2800 as well as 150 ELD-X at 2700. Figure out your range and put it on the appropriate tick in the scope and you are golden to 500 yards. Doesn’t get much easier.

As for rests you can use a pack if you typically carry one or I bought an aluminum quick release bipod that attaches to a rail mount. I plan on putting it in my “take everywhere while hunting” pack (I refuse to call it a fanny pack but it sure looks exactly like one, but it’s camo)

It only takes about 2 minutes! I have reset the parralax on many of my scopes. I have often ran into scopes where the parralax isn't set at the factory specified setting!

I would recommend looking it up on You Tube to get a good visual demonstration
