A friend of mine is going to buy a new rifle for antelope, mule deer, and elk. It will be the only big game rifle he has and it can't be too expensive.

What caliber and make would you guys recommend?

A good 7-08 would work nicely also. Pretty much hard to go wrong on that one.

Tikka SS/Syn 30-06 and then spend about $250 on a good scope like a Leupold. Use the factory rings. They are fine.

Remington 700 BDL SS 7mm Rem mag,or 270WSM is the less expensive.
Kimber 8400 Montana in 270WSM, or 300WSM is the more expensive.

Due to financial constraints, but also perfectly capable in it's own right.......a T3 in 270WSM or 300WSM.

Take him down to Walmart and let him look at the Weatherby Vanguard. It is a heck of a lot of rifle for the dollar. It has a slightly less expensive twin brother. The Howa 1500, a little less flashy but every bit as good for hunting. Both are known for out of the box accuracy.

The caliber choice is easy. Anything between the 270 and 30-06. That would include the 270 WSM, 280 Rem, 7mm Rem Mag, and 7 WSM.

If one is intending to shoot lots of deer and speed goats, while hunting elk once every ten years. And one wishes to find ammo in every gas station and hardware store along the road, the 270 gets the nod.

If one is a serious elk hunter, and still wishes to find ammo easily then buy the 30-06 or 7mm Rem mag. They are ballisticaly interchangeable. But 30-06 ammo is usually a bit cheaper.

Great idea on the Wallmart and Vanguards!

I'd go with an 06 and or a 270.

If he wants a standard caliber: Rem 700 SPS in 270 or 'o6

If he prefers a magnum caliber, same gun in 300 WSM

These can be bought for $500 or so.

Remington 700 ADL (SPS now I guess) in 308 win. Plenty cheap ball ammo to practice with, and absolutely TONS of factory ammo in a million weights and bullets from cheap to premium, and the velocities are perfect for cup and core bullets. Anybody who is going to have only one rifle, and needs it to be cheap, and needs to find out on the internet what it is, needs lots of practice.

Or maybe the new Savage with the old trigger (forgot the name but they ARE cheap!!) $250?

Either prices have dropped a truck load on this rifle and or perhaps you didn't read his part about it not being too expensive?

All things are relative of course.
