D prefix six digit serial number. Straight grip, Schnabel forearm no checkering, round count window, Tang safety. Chambered in 308.
May be getting pics shortly if this isn't enough info to help determine model.
Thanks.

Fireball is correct. Also called a Saddle gun. Good rifles. Surprisingly some showed up with really nicely figured wood. I have one in 250. Given to me by a highly respected Campfire member. Killed my very first WV whitetail with it.

Thanks for the quick replies. Here are some pictures, not the best but all I have. I'm told the rear sight is missing. Any idea on what to offer based on the pictures? https://photos.app.goo.gl/nTqDvJBhLvGuLspCA

D prefix narrows it down to 1979-1982.
Though the serial number in that picture looks like C6xxxxx, which would be late '77 - early '78.

Something don’t look right with the stock and forearm. Just my opinion.

Either refinished or replaced. Won't affect how it kills stuff.

True that but could be something to bring down the price tag on his offer.

Agree, wood finish does not look factory. Anyway, not a collector rifle, but it is a damn good looking hunting rifle. Without the scope I would pay $500 cash for this rifle right now. I have seen some nicer go for as high as $750. In my neck of the woods, $500 would most likely be top dollar for a quick sell, higher if someone had time to market it on Gunbroker and had patience to wait for the guy who can't be without it.

I generally prefer a hammer on my lever guns, but may have to find a spot in the safe for this one. Anyone have a source for the rear sight?

Without looking at the pics to see if it already has a scope mounted, that would be the way I would go with that late of a post-mil. More for the added weight to help tame the recoil of a .308 in a small carbine as for any other reason.

Just noticed the wood to metal matchup on this side panel. Definitely after market or swapped wood. Not good.

Thanks, Rory. I see it does have a scope. Yeah, the wood fit is atrocious. I don't think even Savage at that late date got so careless as to do that. Correct butt plate? (I really don't pay much mind to furniture on post-mil stocks.)

Not the correct butt plate for that era.

Definitely after market wood, ill-fitted. That close up tells a different story, look at the pitting at the lower rear part of the receiver. Even with these, the rifle is still worth $400 if the bore is mirror bright with sharp rifling.

Thanks for all the feedback. I've always wanted a 99 of my own since my grandfather owned one, I wasn't necessarily looking for one when I stumbled across this one, but thought it might be worth considering. After looking back at the pictures and the wood fit I'm going to pass. If anyone is interested this is at Albemarle County Firearms in Charlottesville, Virginia. It's on consignment at $425.

425 is not bad for a hunter in 308. even with the miss fitting stock.
