So I over-lubed some 30-06 cases when re-sizing. The shoulders are dented and look just like those in the pictures in the Speer #10 Manual on page 63 (yes I just dated myself). This is the first time this has ever happened to me.

So my question is, can I still load and fire the cartridges? It seems they would just blow out to the original shape upon firing. Thoughts?

I agree, load and fire them. I keep an old rag in my right hand and wipe off the neck/shoulder area before sizing. Its easy to get too much lube on a case.

Clean the inside of your sizing die to avoid repeating the problem.

Thanks to all for the replies. I do use Imperial but I believe it built up inside the die. As jersyboy said, I need to keep the inside of the die clean. I could see the lube oozing out.

When applying Imperial I act almost as if I'm trying to wipe it off with my fingertips.

With Imperial I only lube every other case and I never put any on the shoulders or neck. I use dry neck lube and media for necks.

I cut my "shoulder bump" amounts pretty fine sometimes, so I lube every case to reduce variation in this dimension.

I actually add an extra step. After applying Imperial to the body of the case, I take a small cotton cloth and wipe the neck, shoulder, and about 1/2" - 3/4" of the body.

The only time I ever got lube dents, was when I was using a lube pad. Haven't done that in over 20 years.

I've been using Imperial since the early 80's. You can still dent shoulders--especially with Redding dies that don't have a hole for excess lube. If you have lube oozing you're using to much. Once you start sizing the brass and have some in the die, skip lubing every other or third piece of brass. It works for me.

MM, have you seen a consistent variation when you have lubed every other case? I wondered about that and measured setback of the shoulders of cases lubed every other and then tried it when lubing every case, couldn't tell a difference.

If the die is to "dry" it have seems a conventional ball sizing is more likely to pull a neck out of alignment.

I don’t put much on, I use a little on my fingers with my left hand, work press handle with my right. I got a lot of dents when I used the liquid.

It has been a good while since I decided to just lube every case, and my equipment has changed a bit since. It was consistent enough with a regular RCBS size die to bug me. I may need to revisit the question with other dies I use now.

Shoot 'em, it'll blow the dents out.

And switch to imperial sizing wax, you won't have that problem any more.
