I'm sure they are for some type of scope mount. There were a number of barrel mounted scopes available in that era. The Savage advertising listed various scopes as being available as early as the Model 1895. 1895's, 1899's and 99's with them are seldom seen. 99K's usually came from the factory (to the best of my knowledge) with a tang mounted peep sight and a Lyman #6 folding sight in the rear sight dovetail. If my rifle came from the factory with a scope they probably grabbed whatever rear sight was available and slapped it on the rifle when the scope came off. Come to think of it, that looks like the semi-buckhorn sight that Savage introduced a few years later. David

I have a 1916 250-3000 with two holes in the barrel. I figure these were for the rear sight on this gun because there is no rear sight just a peep and front site. This rifle has been back to the factory...note the stamping on the receiver ring or an early numbered receiver lost in the shop and put back in the production line years later. Might be able to tell more with other photos.
