I have a big rifle rest/shooting bag that used to be filled with about 40 lb of sand. the handle broke due to the weight and I want to fill it with something lighter but still steady the rifle. what do you all use to fill shooting bags? thanks

Rear bags --heavy sand
Front bags- regular sand

Many of the bags at our range are filled with spent primers. These are generally inferior to sand, but do have one advantage. Unlike the sand bags they remain flexible after exposure to rain and snow then freezing. Also the don't tend to walk away on their own.

My fair weather bag is filled with kitty litter and works great. Non scented of course.

Go to a hobby store or Walmart and get the little plastic beads. They come in different sizes and shapes. The smallest ones with a hole for stringing on a neckless work the best. Work really great and keeps your bag just soft enough not to give you vertical. A lot lighter!

I went to one of the large pet stores and bought the "sand" used in reptile enclosures.
I don't know what it is but works well and much lighter than sand.
If using Kitty Litter, floor dry is the cheaper version of same.

Sand in the bag on my front rest, sand in my rear rest. A big bag like a bulls bag i use kitty litter.
I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA

I use lead shot in the bags on my rest to make them heavier and sand in my rabbit ear bags.

I make my own bags out of old denim jean pant legs (cut to your preferred length) filled with dried beans, they dont weigh down my range bag and work fine for me 👍.......Good luck.....Hb

I filled my Bull Bag with bird seed. It has some weight which is good but is still very flexible to contour to the rifle I am shooting. It is also reasonably priced as well. I just used a small kitchen funnel and kept tapping the bag to settle the seed to fill it to capacity with no voids.

Range front and rear rest heavy sand. Field bags are pant legs and shot bags full of wheat.

thanks to all. Since I'm lookin to save weigh i like the plastic bead idea. Also see that bulls bag uses kitty litter for the factory fill bags. trying to stay away from anything that pests can eat or absorbs water. Sand in this big thing was too heavy and broke the strap/handle. appreciate your time.

Cat litter or #8 bird shot, depends on what I'm shooting.

Plastic BBs from a local junk store. $.25/#. Best ever. Air soft BBs are too pricey.
