Gentleman I beg for help. I saw two nice M99 today and would love to buy both of them. My walet can cover only one. Please help me decide wich one to buy. One of them is nice 300 savage G TD with apparently all original stuf. Second is handy and trim looking 300 savage F. This will be my first M99. I am not collector, (at least not yet) and I will take this rifle hunting few times. If considering that condition of the both rifles being equaly good wich should I buy. I will have to decide today. Thank you in advance.

The .300 F is the better hunter just due to the sheer weight difference. You didn't mention prices? Assuming it's a late model F it is also drilled and tapped for the scope.

You better buy them both or you will hate yourself in the morning!

Myself, I'd go for the "G" if it's all original. Just my preference. I've always had a soft spot for "G"s as that is what my first one was. If the "F" is a late model and factory D&Ted and you want/need to mount a scope then I'd opt for Lightfoot's choice. All things being equal and neither one D&Ted then definitely the "G".

Thanks for input. As far as date of manufacture? I could be wrong but I think that M99F was made between 1955 and 1960. It has lever safety and according to Murray's book that was changed to tang safety in 1960.

This is like; Should I get the Porche or the Ferrari? The busty blonde or the leggy brunette? The hunting camp in the mountains or the fishing camp in the valley? The Harley or the.............bad example, The Harley. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Speaking of Busty Blonde; I ran into a blonde 99, just post 1 mil serial# 308. Seemed like a 20 inch barrel with standard raised ramp front sight, lever safety. Great shape for 350. Not that collectable fro sure but I just wish it were in 300. Did the blondes have a particular caliber or were they across the board (I assume the latter) How about model or again across the board. NM in Vt.

Gentleman I did not do well. When I got back to buy G baby price shot up past my means. Apparently this one was in collector category and someone was willing to pay more than $700. I suspect that I will regret being stingy on this one later. I will try to buy F model. Like I stated I am not a collector but I liked that G more overall. Again thank for your input. This is excellent forum but I am afraid that it has bad influence on me. I am develoing taste for M99s and this as you know leads to slippery slope of wanting more and more of them. Wish me luck with this other one.

Kosinar,

Sounds like you're well on your way down that slippery slope. Just make sure it's a gradual incline rather than a steep one. That way you'll get more for your money and end up with better examples of the 99. Don't let the hots to score lead you to a shotgun wedding.

The blond wood is the post-1960 Model-E. Calibers were .250, .300, .243 and .308.
