My sister always used to refer to me a "catching" a deer. After I called her on it she still uses the phase, but at least it is now with irony.

Every native I ever met from Bush Alaska spoke of catching moose, bear, caribou, musk ox, seals, basically anything they killed.

It's weird but extremely common.

I don't think most even know they are misspeaking.

Here in Northwest Alaska, local folks refer to 'catching' animals as a term of the hunt, when the end result is food and usable materials from antler, bones hide, ect,
Here, there is still a spiritual connection to the endless hunting Eskimo folks used to engage in, in a cycle of birth, hunting, death, and more hunting in the after life with the same animals untill rebirth into a world of hunting.
Useing the word 'Catch' made alot more sense after that was explained to me.

Its preferred to the word 'Kill', because that's what you do to people, kill 'em dead, with no use afterward.

"Harvesting'' , to a society of Hunters, is a reference to farming, most likely brought into vogue as a softer, more politically correct way to describe hunting in the last 20 years.

Besides, we 'catch' fish, right?

On the other hand, it's common to hear knowledgeable military or hunting types speaking of an unfortunate person or animal "catching a bullet".

Forgive me my nonsense, as I also forgive the nonsense of those that think they talk sense.

Heard that used on me a number of times.. A few years back my own step daughter asked me if I had caught a deer. I told her; " no....... I shot one".

Just different ways of saying the same thing. My native friends from the YK delta region in western Alaska ask me if I "caught" a moose. People in Anchorage and the valley ask if you "got" a moose. Villages in Kodiak they would ask if I killed any deer. Most everybody everywhere asks if you "caught" anything if you went fishing. When I was young in the West of Ireland I fished a lot where my grandparents lived. People spoke Irish but would use English with me as I had moved away. When they encountered me walking on one of the few roads with a rod in my hand they would always ask me how many did I "kill". Pretty funny trying to explain that I had learned to do catch and release fishing in America. They were not impressed. I never felt the need to correct anybody as they all meant the same thing.

Wife's friend comes to my house as I'm loading up for a hunting trip. She says to me,"You going to go shoot Bambi?".

I told her, "No, not Bambi. I'm after his Dad."

Left her speechless.
