After sorting through the chaff (Feral Cat and a Pack Rat) for a few weeks I finally caught the culprit that's been destroying my house trying to get in my crawl space. The bad news was I caught him at 2:30am. The trap was under my deck right below my bedroom window so after the racket woke me up there was no way I was going to get any sleep so I had to get up, get dressed, and go outside and dispatch the dam thing in the middle of the night in Jan. And to add a little more drama to my whine that was after I had been sick as a dog all day. I went out and retrieved the bastard after it warmed up this morning. 25-30# Boar....felt like 30 after dragging it out from under the deck so probably 25. PS...CCI's new Quiet rounds are NOT a good choice for dispatching Coon.

I concur. Center punched a few possums with them only to have em amble off. There are better choices.

I was sick and it was dark and cold out so I used what was in the closest gun available. I usually use Shorts...they're fine for Cats and Coyotes but Coons definitely need more killing.

It's all about shot placement. I've also found a few CC's of alcohol injected into the chest cavity will kill them almost instantly and is totally silent
One shot, one kill........ It saves a lot of ammo!

Good job with the coon.
I've caught dozens here in the past few years.
I always shoot 'em with my Ruger .22 through the chest from the top downward whilst in the live trap.
They kick a few times, but far less muss than head shooting them. My dogs usually chew on them a bit after I shoot, and I'd have to spend half and hour washing blood off dogs when I shot coons in the head...

It's all about shot placement. People love to spout that chit like it's some secret that nobody else is smart enough to figure out. Try shooting a Coon on your knees, under a deck, in the middle of a cold night, with a flashlight and get back to me. PS....Does the one I put between his eyes count for good shot placement. Barry.....I agree about the bloody head shots but fur buyers don't want holes in the hide so most guys I know shoot em in the head. I just wanted this one dead so I didn't really care where I had to shoot it. I hit it once in the heart, once between the eyes, and finally killed it with a neck shot that severed the spine. I'm pretty sure the first shot was a heart shot because it immediately started pouring blood which is usually a pretty indicator for an entrance only wound. I'm sure it would have died in a minute or two but I didn't want to have to crawl back under there so I made sure.

I had to do the crawl under at night thingy awhile back. Problem was, it was a skunk. Under my utility trailer. I had the missus run trade my pistola for my 12ga... Blew him right out the other side! Didn't take but about 2 months for that smell to go away. Hope you are feeling better soon, Charlie. Been a bit worried about you of late.

Wife was not happy when the wind shifted next day.

Hey Charlie,
20-30 lb? Crap, that's near as big as the badger I had to kill next to the chicken coop this summer.
Hope you're feeling better soon.

I've got a couple of game cam pics of a striped kitty nosing around my compost piles. I worry that some night it's going to squeeze through the gates on the dog fence in the backyard and spray one of the "kids".................or me when I go out for an armload of wood! Not a fan of them skunks for sure.
Blocked up a hole going under the woodshed that I knew a cottontail used, because one of the cam pics showed the skunk investigating that too.
Damn vermin.

rockinbbar,
I feel your pain. - One Winter night, year before last about 8PM, my little brother (All 240# of him) grabbed the first gun that he reached in the house & shot the "!@#$%^! trash raiding coon".
Only it was a large skunk that he shot with the .338 Win Mag. - One H of a stink, but little else left of the skunk but it was surely "fragrant" for several days on that side of the house.
I just had to LOL.
yours, tex

It's almost skunk mating season here, and they'll be everywhere. The air will be ripe with the fragrance of Pepe Le Pew. I had one that decided to move into an outbuilding several years ago, and had to put up with skunk smell for a month until I finally got a chance to kill it. They are good at cleaning rats and mice put though, better than any cat.

My wife got two last week. Second one was close to the size of yours. These are caught with a Tru-catch live trap in our barn. I use a .22 long rifle and shoot them in the back of the head from about a foot away. Once in awhile we catch a skunk. No fun then.

I hold a tarp between us and slowly cover the trap with it. Then I set the trap in the truck and take em down to the river for a swim. I haven't had one spray yet.......yet. Foot holds are another story. I shoot em and come back a couple days later to take em out of my trap and reset. That part is never fun.
