I've never been able to find a good answer. My grandparents came from Slovakia and Ukraine back before World War One and were just peasants, yet they had no problem being admitted. I wonder what with all the lawyers who need to be involved, and government paperwork, whether those who are manual laborers and the like, just can't afford to become legal. I'm not saying that it's right, just that it just might not be possible for them.

Then they should stay home. When did your ancestors come here and where did they come from?

I wonder what with all the lawyers who need to be involved, and government paperwork, whether those who are manual laborers and the like, just can't afford to become legal. I know the government has forms in 398,765 languages. They no doubt have free attorneys and interpreters also. Once in line, all they have to do is pass the test. It helps learn how to speak English while your here. That is unless you refuse to assimilate.

I immigrated in the 90's, from Canada. It wasn't cheap, but my employer paid most of the cost. IIRC it cost about $25K. It can be done cheaper, but if you want it done fast, you have to pay lawyers and that's spendy.
The problem as I see it is that the USA needs to be honest about WHO we want immigrating, and then stick to it. Virtually every other industrialized nation in the world has priorities for immigration, and they don't let people come in who are going to be a drag on the economy... rather, they insist that immigrants have employability, education, skills, and money. This applies in Canada, Australia, Singapore, etc, etc, etc.
Importing unskilled laborers is just plain stupid. We need to be importing people with skills and education that will benefit our workforce and our economy. But the way it's set up now, professionals have a harder time getting in than unskilled and unemployable "refugees". That needs to change.

I started the process in the late 80’s, and it took almost 5 years and about $20k for my wife and I. Took longer than usual because of the Reagan amnesty that clogged up the works.

Mine came over on the Mayflower and killed Indians. Ohhhh, yeah ? Mine did too and were in the 1st class section. My 2nd cousin married a girl from Germany. All though she didn’t have to, she went the full route to citizenship. I went to the ceremony. Costs were negligible doing it that way, wished I could help with the outside application method. I do recall that when China was handed back to them Hong Kong from the British, many Hong Kong ers went to Vancouver and the price for that was 50k$ Canadian.

$20-30k is dirt fuggin’ cheap to become a citizen of the greatest country in the world. Also well within the means of near anybody that is here legally and able to work.

My buddy and his wife had a 100 acres of old and second growth wooded beachfront property on Vancouver island. It had 2 cabins and a nice Lindal cedar home right on the beach of their private cove. They tried to get dual citizenship back in the ‘90’s but it was just over $500,000 that it was going to cost them in fees and money deposited in escrow. Taxes alone for the property were $1,000 per acre per year.....$100,000 in taxes per year convinced them to sell 80 acres and keep the 20 acres and the cedar home. They sold those 80 acres for a million per acre to an Alberta oilman on contract so they’re doing fine.
I know that it costs more to get citizenship in most other countries than it does in the USA.

If you have money it cost a fortune.
If you don’t it’s free.
Same as everything else.
