Looked at some 2007-2012 models. I prefer Toyota, but they look like a lot for the $$

If it were myself I would go with the Toyota.
After 30 plus years of working on cars for a living IMHO the Toyota is a much better engineered and built vehicle.
Of the big three Asian manufacturers I would rank Nissan number 3 in the reliability department.

Go to NPORA, Nissan Pathfinder Off-road Association, for information. I recently purchased a 2000 Pathfinder SE, 4x4 for a DD. Runs great, good on reasonable off road situations and has lots of upgrades. Fair fuel mileage.
You also might want to consider an Xterra 4x4. MTG

I say no.

My ex wife has one and it's had small issue after small issue. It has smelled like it has an antifreeze leak since day one. Chicks dig em. That should tell you something.

Nah, the B210 was their best. My brother and I drove his back from Ft Ord, CA to Detroit when he got out of the army in 1978. The speed limit was 55 and we were lucky to get there. I remember climbing the Wasatch Mtns coming out of Salt Lake City in 3rd gear at about 35-40mph with the gas pedal embedded in the floor...it was gun!

Or the 210.

My last Datsun/Nissan was an '82 5 door Stanza.
That car ran great. Very soft suspension though, it felt like a mini version of the Detroit iron boats, Buick 225 style.

We owned two Datsuns, a mini pickup and a 310. Both were horrible cars. Won't own a Nissan. One of my fishing buddies has an Armada and has lots of little things and a few major things wrong on a regular basis.

I've had a few and decided they were not worth it, they go wonky after a bit. Weird electrical problems and so forth.

You need a patrol or a safari. Those old Patrol's are bad ass! I [bleep] up a couple months ago, was down on Grand Cayman and surfing Craigslist, guy in Richmond had a 2001 (?) I think, landcruiser, 110,000 miles, one owner with diff locks for $7500.00. I called and told him I was flying into Richmond the next day and I'd take it...got home it was gone. Shoulda insisted he take a deposit.

No experience with the Pathfinder but for 2 weeks I rented the truck version the nissan frontier pro 4x truck when I flew back east last deer season.

I am normally not a Nissan guy but that Pro 4x package on the truck was great. Had foot of snow followed by rain and then single digit temps and the mountain roads were wicked! Every night there were trucks over the bank and 4x4 tow trucks with chains front and back pulling them out.

BUT with the power locking front / rear diff's and low range I had no problems getting in and out of the camp. Truck had 26k when I picked it up but for 1500 miles I put on it I was impressed!

I’m currently driving a 4WD Frontier that is a rental. It appears to be a tough little truck. Lots of power and it rides better than my Tacoma ever did. Less road noise than the Tacoma too. Since its a rental, I can’t make a call on long term reliability.
