I have a Savage 99 which according to serial number was made in 1954. I am trying to identify the letter model designation for this gun. It has a schnabel fore end, checkering on the fore end and on a pistol grip. It has a cartridge counter. It came with scope bases mounted, but I do not know if it was factory drilled and tapped or that done later. I cannot read a faint stamping on the lever boss, but it might be 31 or 3I (letter I). dochunter@outdrs.net

Most likely factory drilled and tapped if "Savage 1899" stamped on side of receiver boss where barrel screws into receiver.

The letter in the lever boss code will be F if the 1954 date is correct.

Most likely factory drilled and tapped if "Savage 1899" stamped on side of receiver boss where barrel screws into receiver. "SAVAGE MODEL 99" is the stamp that would be on the side of the receiver. If you can't see the SAVAGE MODEL 99 stamp to the left of the front scope base, it's after market drilled.
