I am new to loading for the 6.5-06. I will be shooting 120-140 grain bullets. Please give me your top 3 choices, in order, for the 6.5-06. Thanks for any feedback I will be using brass formed from 270 cases. John.

H-1000 for heavier bullets and H 4350 for 120s.

When I had a 6.5x06 I loaded the 140 gr SMK withIMR4350 and H4831 and IMR4350 was best in my rifle. The 6.5x06 is a very good cartridge. I have corrected my post IMR4350 instead of H4350. jndd

Retumbo has been stellar for me in 25-06 with 110-120 grain bullets. I'd have to give it a look in 6.5-06 if it were me.

24” barrel, what are realistic top velocities for the 140 grain bullets? Is 2900 safely doable?

Anybody who seriously concerns themselves with the adequacy of a Big 7mm for anything we hunt here short of brown bear, is a dufus. They are mostly making shidt up. Crunch! Nite-nite!

53 grs of IMR -4350gives me a consistent 3277 fps in my 6.5-06 24" bbl. with the Barnes 120gr TSX. Is absolutely safe in my rifle. Have not seen the need for a heavier bullet. Delivers flat trajectory with moderate recoil. Give complete penetration on mature elk.

RatherBhuntin,
In my experience H1000, H4350 and Vihtavuori N560 are all well worth a try--partly because they're all very temperature-resistant powders. Others will shoot small groups at some temperatures, then not work the same when temperatures change. I prefer to work up handloads that shoot the same in a wide variety of temps, but that's due to living in Montana, plus traveling to hunt different places now and then,
