Ever seen them grow? They are alien. Still I like them picked small and steamed (if you listen closely you can hear the alien screams).

Pressure cooked until just this side of soft and mushy. Slathered with butter or cheddar cheese sauce.

That's dinner.

They're good if you know how to cook them. Pretty much like everything except liver.

I like them steamed with a dab of butter and salt to taste.

Sometimes when they are picked turns them bitter.

Love em; eat em as a snack.

One night after an evening out w/ the girls wife comes home to me partying hearty with a steamer bag of Brussels & the remote on the couch. She barely walks through the door when she asks, “oh my word did the dog poop on the floor again!?!?”

No honey; that’s my “vice” smile !

Amen.

Spent several years in England where brussel sprouts are staple crop. At the time they were picked by hand. More often than not, half the crop rotted on the vine. Talk about a putrid smell. The smell of rotting brussel sprout only heightened my dislike for them.

For 50 years of my life, I absolutely, positively, completely, affirmatively, utterly, passionately detested brussels sprouts.

Then a good fried served some stir fried ones for dinner. Out of politeness (not my strong suit, but he is a GOOD friend) I tried them, and, well, turns out it's not the brussels sprouts I hated, it's my mother's cooking. And that's not the first time I made that observation. Count your blessings if you have a mother that knew how to cook well.

My go to recipe these days:

4 oz of bacon (we buy bacon ends and pieces by the 5 lb brick around here, it goes everywhere). Cut and cross cut, 1/2". I cut from frozen.
Trim the ends off and halve the brussels sprouts. Mix bacon with Brussels sprouts and olive oil, and spread out on baking sheet. Bake in oven at 400 degrees for 30-40 minutes. Stir once or twice. Remove, add a couple of table spoons of Balsamic Vinegar, and serve.

You can add onions as well, they bake really nicely and the sweet contrasts nicely with the bitter from the sprouts and the acid of the vinegar.

Next up lesson: Kale.
