I use whatever 150 gr factory load is cheapest down to the Fleet/Farm, or 150 Hornady interlocks in handloads. My conditions are pretty well identical to yours.

I may have to give that one a shot in my Grandpas old rifle! Bet that’s a good killer.

My Dad (1922-2004) hunted extensively with his 300 Savage for many decades. Typically he bought 180 grain ammo featuring a round tip and lots of lead exposed.

I use them in about 1/2 of the Savage 300s I load for, and 150 gr. Sierras in the rest. The individual rifles often show a preference.

150gr. Remington Core-Lokt bullets. All I use for deer in my 99.

I thought that EdM was giving them a whirl. Maybe shoot him a PM.

FWIW, I've had such good luck with 130 TTSX's from 3 different rifles in this chambering, that I haven't bothered with anything else. No deer, yet, but shots on several hogs have yielded 100% complete pass-throughs with DRT results. I load them to 2,780 fps or so in a 99, and up to 2,950+ in bolt rifles. It gives an awful lot of "bite" for almost negligible "bark".

For the past two years I’ve loaded my daughters rifle with the 110gr Barnes ttsx’s. The load is close to 3000 fps and does a great job on South Texas whitetail. Once we run out I’m going to try the 130 Barnes ttsx’s.

I've yet to kill anything with my '99 300 Savage but usually load the 165 Partition with RE 15 mainly because there are elk about where I hunt deer, and that combo shoots very well. If I were strictly hunting deer, the Hornady 150 SP with H4895 would likely be my pick.

My daughter's M700 Classic .300 Savage loves them, but it loves every bullet I've tried. My 16 year old daughter just shoots the light bullets better, so I go with what she shoots best. They're running about 3100 fps in her rifle and it takes a long ways for a heavier, higher BC bullet to overtake the little 125. I have quite a few 125 grain AB and GMX bullets I'll be giving a try when my supply of BT bullets run low.

My dad and I both ran this bullet in our 99's this past season. I shot 5 feral hogs and one W.T. doe with it and he shot several feral hogs. All were one shot kills and on game performance was excellent in my opinion. I shot one fairly large boar straight through the front shoulders at about 160 yards. The bullet penetrated both the shields and bones of both shoulders and exited leaving a quarter sized exit wound. My rifle shoots this bullet best in front of I4320 and my dad's rifle was most accurate with this bullet in front of 4064. We played around with different loads. Overall in our rifles this bullet has proven to be a little more accurate than the standard 150 Hornady Spire point which is a great bullet in this round as well.

In addition to the SST I also shot an additional 5 hogs with 150 grain Remington core lokt factory loads. Again everything died quickly with one shot. I kind of think that you can pick most any good hunting bullet and it will work fine in this round. I really want to try the 125 grain accubond in mine and hope to try it this summer. The 130 TTSX interests me as well. I'm new to the .300 Savage having just used it this past hunting season. I REALLY like this round and the 99F that launches it.

Any 150 cup and core that shoots in you rifle, I like the Sierra Game King. Used a 125 Nosler BT, last year and it was deadly. Complete pass through and destroyed everything in its path, DRT. Aprox 150 yds. This is of course an example of one! I used it again. 44 Grains Varget @ approx 2875 FPS. ( looked at my notes, last night 2810 FPS out of a 22" barrel)

2660 with 49 grns of RL15 out of a 22” 760.

I started contemplating a softer bullet because at 200 yds the Hornady is only moving 2100 and some change. According to Hornady, the velocity window for that specific bullet is 2700-3600 FPS. I find that hard to believe. Their 165 goes down to 2200 and the 180 2400. So on paper, it looks like the 165 might be a better slow bullet, or...load the Sierra 150 as others suggested.

Some kind of 150 grainer for deer and elk. I use half jackets if I want to shoot sage rats with it. I am using Power Points at the moment. One of my favorrites for the round as it is relatively short. Reloads done most of the time with IMR 4064 or Ball C-2,

Expansion is dandy.Very little bloodshot meat unless I hit bone.

I've been loading down for a .30'06 and/or a .308 for six years, now, using IMR4198. First for my oldest son when he wasn't as big and his rifle of choice was his great grandfather's FN Mauser, passed to him and put into his hands by his great grandfather. Next for my dad after rotator cuff and back surgery. Most recently, for my daughter who shoots a M99 .308.

I've loaded 125 Sierra PH's, 130 Hornady SP's (#3020), and 125 Nosler BT/AB's. All three reduced loads that we settled on had a MV between 2450 and 2650. None of them ever failed to take a deer or hog with one shot and little or no travel after the shot, from as close as 35 yds out to 140 yds. Not a lot of meat damage, ideal expansion from all indicators, excellent internal performance. All were complete pass throughs with one exception, which was the 130 Hdy found just under the the offside hide on a shallow quartering shot that passed through a lot of body. Perfect mushroom that weighs 87 gns. The 130 was so accurate in my own .308 (M77 MkII) that I started using it myself loaded to a MV right at 3000.

It's curious that Hornady presently lists the bullet as being for varmints. Either they changed the construction very recently, or we've just been really lucky. Four 90-160 lb hogs and five deer up to 157 lbs taken with no fragmentation or internally shed jackets, including two that hit bone, would argue that Hornady's listing it as a varmint bullet is a bit odd. Given that the 125 Sierra and the 125 Nosler offerings do just as well, with nearly the same group size, maybe I'll stop using the Hornady when my present stock is used up. My oldest son decided he wanted to reach further and graduate from the "kid" load, so he's moved on to a fairly stout 4064 load but his rifle really likes the 125 AB, so he's still using it. My dad and my daughter still use the reduced loads suited to their rifles. No reason to change what works so well.

Usually any flat base 150 grain works well.

My main load For a Sav 99, and a Rem 81 is a Speer Hot-or with IMR 4895. I have used partitions, ballistic tips, and SST bullets.
