I got Ol' Fugly the 03 Springfield back from the gunsmith today and I'm in the process of finding scope bases.

As I am new to an 03 action, is there a standard Weaver style 03 base tha most gunsmiths drilled and tapped them for or is it pot luck on the hole spacing?

Thanks

Redfield and Weaver build mounts for it, maybe you shoould look at Midway for sure they will have, I use Weaver type of mounts on mine I bought them at a local gun shop in Houston TX

I have Buehlers on the two custom rifles built on 03 actions that I have--I like them a lot! I don't think that you can order them any more, but I run across bases and rings at gun shows on a pretty regular basis.

Thanks for the input. I did some digging and it looks like it should use a #48 and #55 Weaver base.

hillbillybear,

Did your 03 A3 previously have a peep sight or rear sight of any kind? What did you do to the rear sight mount so that you can mount a base on it?

I'm going to the process of doing the same thing you are but on mine it used to have a peep sight which I removed but the rear sits higher than the front and also has a little thing where the peep site would mount to.

I have another 03A3, custom built with a Douglas barrel on a 280 Rem. It looks like on this one the gunsmith that mounted the bases milled the base to fit where the peep sight used to be. It is a Weaver base and rings and the rifle shoots real good.

Now I want to do this other 03A3 on a 280 AI but I need to figure out what to do with the rear base mount.

If anyone out there knows what I'm talking about, please give me your opinions. It will be appreciated.

Thanks

According to Ye Olde Weaver Mounting Chart, the Springfield 1903 and the 1903A3 take different bases, because the rears of the receiver ("receiver bridge") are different. 1903: 54 & 55; 1903A3: 59 & 45. The 59 is cut out (straight from the factory) to fit around the male dovetail the peep sight was mounted on. I likely have all these here (somewhere), as I seldom have call to drill holes in Springfield receivers anymore.

As I type this there are both Redfield and Buehler Springfield scope mount bases on ebay.com. Search "Springfield 1903 base".

Thanks Guys. I'll look into the bases. I really appreciate the help. I also found that Redfield & Leupold also make bases for the 03A3 too. I don't know if they come out from the factory like the Weavers like Richarda mentions in a previous post but I'll look into that too.
