Looking at getting a 1911 in 10mm this spring. Plan is to have a 40 s&w barrel fitted. I have thousands of rounds of 40 loaded and would likely run more 40 through it than 10mm. I am currently considering either the Ruger or the Springfield Range Officer. Both seem to be a good value. I have a SR1911 cmndr, and I really like it. Given the big differences in bullet weights and velocities, I'm thinking that an adjustable rear would be a good idea. Anyone done this? Any ideas? Thanks, Al

I haven't don't it yet, but talked to a local smith about doing it on a kimber 10mm, and he said it's not a big deal. Been told you will need to change the recoil spring, and feeding can be somewhat finicky as the 40 is a little shorter than the 10 and because of that the 40's can move back and forth in the magazine. Same thing happens in the G20 when you load 40's in the 10mm magazine. I wouldn't rely on it for self defense, but targeting shooting, it's more than fine. And by all means get adjustable sights. The 10mm has so many power offerings that adjustable is prerequisite for that caliber alone.

Thanks. You confirmed what I've been thinking. 40 would be limited to the back yard range. I know I could load the 10mm light for plinking and general screwing around, but I've got a ton of 40, and what the heck......
