Follow the safety procedures as you would with any other “new to you” firearm. And the fist thing I’d check would be the safety itself. The 99 is a fairly robust action and it takes a lot to mess one up - though not that that sort of thing has never happened.
PS - oh yeah, and welcome to a new adventure in the world of firearms. The 99 is an American classic!

The .300 Savage is a great deer cartridge and if you handload you can shoot it cheap.

Welcome to the 99 club. A hot iron and a cool damp wash cloth will lift shallow dings and dents 😉

I did not want one that to nice to take to the woods i want to enjoy it and not worry about a ding or a scrach I never saw one that I wouldn't take to the woods because it was too nice. I have a 99CE and a 99 DE that will most likely never get hunted only because I don't desire to hunt them. I have several that cost me more money and they are veteran deer killers now.

There is a reason why so many buyers purchased Savage 99s in 300 Savage. And that is because it’s a proven game getter. It totally blows away the 30-30 and 32 Special, the two other popular lever chamberings of their day. The 300 Savage has more energy at 200 yards than the 30-30 has at the barrel. Despite all that, I still really like the 30-30 too. But if I was going on a big hunt and had to make a choice, the 300 Savage would go all week long and twice on Sunday. Enjoy your new firearm. Post your first big game taken with it. Then, you will truly be in the club. RAS

Back in '02 I went deer hunting in northern WI for the first time since I'd gone to the Army in '72. About the third day of hunting I shot a spike buck. We got it back to the shack and hung it on the meat pole which was about 80 feet from the shack and cut all the meat off the bones. The next morning while we were eating breakfast the son of my hunting buddy that owned the shack said "I can see the hole in the rib cage from here. What did you shoot it with?" I told him I shot it with a 300 Savage.

the 300 savage is why there is a 308/7.62 nato(spit on the floor, nato not the 308). typical govt. can't leave good enough alone. i look in my gun cabinet and see the 300 next to the 308 and wonder why. 99 itis is the only reason. for me the 300 is funner!

I read often on this forum how the 300 in a 99 is the sheit. It butters bread, fries bacon, and fills up the car with gas. I also read that the 308 is a kicking SOB and guys wouldn't touch one with a ten foot pole. Honestly, I cannot reconcile those two schools of thought.

The only difference I can see is the monte carlo stock on the 308 I had would punch me in the jaw every time I pulled the trigger, while the EG stock on the 300 Savages I've had are better designed.

That's a fair assessment, although I've read that the 99F in 308 is the big offender. Also, that the 99F in 300 just may be Savages best invention ever.
Seriously. Can't see it both ways, they're too similar.

NATO started with the 300 Savage but it jammed in the fully automatic guns due to the short neck and steep shoulder. The NATO engineers lengthened the neck and used a less abrupt shoulder. Viola! The 7.62 NATO. It held four more grains powder than the 300 Savage and was therefore slightly more powerful if fully loaded. The instructions with my Springfield M1A (a semi-auto M14) says use reduced loads to keep from stretching the operating rod. This would apply to the M14 as well. So I'm thinking the military loads were probably no more powerful than a 300 Savage. I don't notice the recoil from my 18 1/2" barrel 99F 308 but I shoot magnums a lot.
