Is that first number a poorly struck 6 that looks like an 8? definitively an 8

Can you read the stamp on the lever boss?
If so what does it say? Not doubting, trying to figure out....

Can you read the stamp on the lever boss?
If so what does it say? Not doubting, trying to figure out.... Where exactly on the lever?

Actually be on the "boss" in front of the actual trigger under the receiver...
should be a circle with a number and a letter in it.

So my head just "sploded" where does my SN fit at 840687? and did I pay too much, (800 bucks).... That Stith set up will bring 300 everyday all day and could bring as much as 400 to a guy that can't live without it. And then you have the gun. You got a good deal no matter how the serial number falls IMO...

Shadow of doubt... I looked at the serial number with a good light and some "cheater" glasses and I must be tired. Looks like a sloppy 8 like you said, but the bill of sale says "8' (hence my "definite" comment). I cannot find any letters where I think I'm looking, so maybe tomorrow with better light I'll report back.

Either way I'm ok with it. Nicest one I've handled.... It's a very nice rifle. Nice case colors tell me it's prolly original even from the one pic. Even if it's a "6" you should still be smiling. Is the rifle drilled and tapped for scope? Curious to see a Stith set up on a rifle this late in production. (early-mid 50's). Mostly see this scope set up on on pre war or immediately post war rifles...

The 800,000s were produced out of order. My personal thought is that it’s a bad struck 6, I’ve been confused by them before more than once. But whether it’s 84x,xxx or 64x,xxx - it should date to 1952 or 1953. Aren’t 99’s fun?  And I think you did okay on the buy, the Stith/scope are expensive.

Well lads, the plot thickens. All I could see on the boss was something like this ( ) but could not make anything else out. I also took a bigger magnifying glass and honestly, I can't make the call on a 6 or 8, but given the rarity, I'm going with a 6...This weekend a friend is bringing over a super-duper glass in the hopes of getting to see something on the boss...

You got a good deal no matter how the serial number falls IMO... I bought a Stith setup complete with a Weaver k2.5 for like 150$ on GB about two weeks ago. I've been beat out on them, with their final price being sub 200$ The only one's I've seen in the price range you suggest, all had Lyman Alaskan scopes.
