Or if you want to be different a .30 Gibbs.

For 20 some years my .30 Gibbs was my 30 caliber King. It kept my freezers full of elk and moose meet all of those years. However the best it would do is push the 180 grain Nosler Partitions out at 2990 fps.

But now it's status has been reduced to "Prince" in the shadow of the new King, my .300 Weatherby with it's 180 grain Barnes TTSX bullets at 3248 fps.

@ elkhunternm, checking back in my notes, I see that my .30 Gibbs velocity was only 2920 fps as the average from 11 shots. My rifle had a 24" barrel, and I was loading 65.0 grains of H4831 with 180 grain NP bullets.

I have always thought the king of the 30's to be the 300 WTHBY. I know there are bigger, more powerful 30 cal. magnums, but if one needs more power than the WTHBY, I believe a bigger diameter bullet is necessary. JMHO!

I think the 300 WSM is "The Best" because it has similar ballistics to many other 300's but reaches that performance in a smaller gun with a shorter barrel and action than the others.

I’ve hunted with the 30-06, 300wn, 300Wby and 30-378. For me, the 300Wby gets the crown. I hate shooting with muzzle breaks, and without the muzzle break, the 30-378 was too much recoil/extra weight for only picking up 200fps with 180s. Nothing wrong with the 300win.....but it did nothing the Wby couldn’t do better. Just my 0.02.
