Metallurgy plays a factor,as does Sectional Density,at said speed limit. Hint.

Jacketed WMR rounds, upset to a lesser extent and have a better pile driving ass.

None of which is subjective.

Hint.............

They are iffy in 1/16.

My Single Six is 1/14, they are stable there, but probably just barely.

Green Mtn was offering 1/9 barrels for the 10/22, don't know if they still are or not.

The only subsonic 22 WMR I'm aware (the Winchester offering) isn't jacketed. It's a 45gr lead hollow point.

Speed Thresholds, unite projectiles in an easy to savvy ranking.

Stick,

I've actually tested several .22 LR loads for penetration.

If it is penetration someone is after, stay away from hollow points... subsonic or not.

The only possible advantage I see to a 22 WMR subsonic is if you do not own a 22LR.

Generally all 22 LR labeled 'subsonic' has a HP, whereas if it is labeled 'standard velocity' (which are sub-sonic) it is always a RN... so if this 'subsonic' WMR is a HP it is not going to "dig" as well as a standard velocity 22 LR.

Now if it is a 50 grain load, then I could very well be wrong about it's penetration capability vs a 40 grain 22 LR.

Twist rate makes a difference at the 2 feet the OP is shooting alligators?

Is a regular .22 mag all that loud through a can, especially at two feet? When I've shot something up close like that the report always seemed muffled.

Shooting any caliber that breaks the sound barrier is much louder than a sub sonic round. My 22 WMR is a bolt action rifle. I use it on alligators because I've had several failure to fire events while using my 10-22 with sub sonic ammo. I will play with the subs this weekend and report back.

Troy,

Remington subsonics perhaps?

If not Remington Sub's (which are basically crap) or the old (as in not available for the last 8 to 10 years) PMC 'Moderator', which are very good, just so low powered that they will not cycle a semi-auto action reliably.

If not and this is regular, something is awry.

Time to try and figure out what is wrong with your 10-22. Most likely you just need to 'Mod' your 10-22 bolt for subsonics. Out of several 10-22's, I have had only one that would not function with subsonics no matter what.

There are youtubes on how to modify the bolt, basically you are just radiusing the lower rear of the bolt so that it glides over/cocks the hammer easier.

Also a 10% lighter recoil spring would be helpful.

Hopefully you will report back here with your results using the 22 Magnum subs.

Jerry
