In an episode of "Tracks Across Africa," a few weeks back, Craig Boddington used a Tropical #1 in a 450-400 to hunt buff with. If Ruger had a 450-400 for CB to use, it must be in the works as they will never do a single copy of anything no matter who it is. They're probably gauging the demand due to that episode at this moment.

Rattler, I have the 3 1/4 in version of the .450/.400 in a 1909 Watson Bros. double that goes 10 lbs 4 oz with a panatella up each pipe. The recoil is certainly noticeable, but no worse than a 9 pound .375. My load is 69 gr of RL-15 behind 400 gr Woodleighs, for around 2100 fps. With a 1 gr poly filler over powder. Regulates perfectly, and absolutely a blast on charging milk jugs. I was hoping they'd chamber the Ruger in the 3 1/4 in version so I could quit paying an arm and a leg for cases.

As was mentioned before, the No1H comes with at least 2 barrel profiles. Some data to chew on.
3 No 1s, all blue/walnut empty without scope or rings.
1S 45-70 7.31 lbs 1H 405 8.30 1H 416 Rem 9.31
I have to believe the 400 Jeffery will come in at the high end of that range. 400 grains @ 2150 is a healthy shove.

I just noticed Grafs has the Hornady brass and ammo in 9.3x74 and 450/400 listed, though nothing in stock yet.
And curiously, no listing at all for 375 Ruger.
They also show 2 Horn loads in 416 Rigby @ about $70 per 20. Granted the Federals @ $165 are loaded with "premium" bullets, but I can get a lot more than 20 premium bullets for $95.
Ah....I smell competition. Can lower prices be far behind?

Has anybody talked to the folks at Ruger RE: a date for production of the .450/400?

I want one, then I want them to build a double .450/400 on the /gold label frame for around $2500. When wishing you might as well wish big. I do think Ruger has the capability to build a strong reliable double rifle reasonably, though probably not that reasonable.

First wood stocked .450/400 I see , I'll buy. Doesn't seem to be a public timeline for getting them out of the factory though.

Jstevens, That would be wonderful if they would build a double rifle on the Gold Label frame. SakoAlberta, My 450/400 #1 rifle and ammo remain "on order" Looks like the info that I got earlier was false as the trees are budding here in Tx. I will let you know when I take delivery. The regional Ruger wholesaler Bernie's Shooting Supply said that Ruger made this caliber of the Number 1 a special preproduction order item.

Didn't notice this thread before or would have posted. .....Anyway, the word I got from Ruger was that the 450/400's were to go into production early April, so would expect some into the chain by May. On weight and recoil, I rechambered a .405 a couple of years ago and don't find it bad with full house loads. ......only problem I found was some proud wood on the forend that peeled a bit of skin from the fingers during a little confrontation with another Yogi!!! ~Arctic~
