I've had a couple 7 RMs and 7-08s. Currently only have one 7-08 SS Rem M7. It's my go to walking and tree stand rifle. I deer hunt NC so no need for uber flat shooting or high BC rounds. 7-08 is perfect for my needs but no better for my use than any other typical deer cartridges.

I've had two 7MM RMs, both M700 Remingtons. Traded the first one for a .30-06. The other one was given to me and I used it for a season when it was the only serviceable big game rifle I had. After my .30-06 was rebarreled it got traded for a left hand .270W that I gave my left handed son in law. Just didn't love 7MM RM like I do .30-06.

I've had two 7 mms, both 7 mm Rem mags,. The first was a Rem 700 ADL with black barrel in a black Tupperware stock. I used in on my first South African Plains Game hunt, a hunt in the Canadian Arctic for Caribou and Musk ox, and elk and antelope in Montana. I traded it on a stainless Rem 700 BDL, also in a Tupperware stock that lengthened, pillar and glass bedded, and painted. I've used it on PG hunts in Zimbabwe, South Africa, and Quebec caribou. It's my foul weather rifle for just about anything.

I have the 280 Rem as well as the 7 Rem Mag. The following describes the differences you questioned about and is from wiki: One of P.O. Ackley's earliest wildcats was the 7mm-06 Improved, which was made by necking down the .30-06 Springfield case and fire-forming it to have less body taper and a 40-degree shoulder angle. Soon after the .280 Remington came out, Fred Huntington reformed its case to an improved configuration with minimum body taper, a 35-degree shoulder angle, and called it the .280 RCBS. Since cases for the .280 RCBS could be formed by firing .280 Remington ammo in a rifle chambered for the former, Ackley abandoned the 7mm-06 Improved and started chambering rifles for the .280 RCBS. He then changed the 35-degree shoulder to 40-degrees and the .280 Ackley Improved was born. If barrel length and chamber pressure are equal, the .280 Ackley Improved is about 100 fps faster with all bullet weights than the standard .280 Remington. In 2007, ammunition manufacturer Nosler registered the .280 Ackley Improved with SAAMI and began providing factory loaded ammunition and rifles for it. 7mm JRS cannot safely be fire formed from 280 Ackley, user must form false shoulder first
