44 Specials have never sold well. I don't know about the really old ones, but I don't think the model 24's or what was it? The model of 1955? I don't think they sold well and I know the 24/624 models from the 80's didn't sell well either. Skeeter was always waxing nostalgic for them though-I think they may have been his favorite caliber. When I was a kid, they were still for sale but only two guns, the Colt SAA or its adjustable sighted version, the New Frontier, or the Charter Arms Bulldog, which had/has a checkered history, quality wise, ranging from pretty good to just fair. After I got into college in the 80's, Colt started coming out with two-cylinder models which included a 44-40 cylinder, making them way more attractive. They were usually in Sheriff's model configuration when spied in the Shotgun News. Towards the end of the decade the other barrel lengths were seen more in there and at the shows. The Smith's were not made long as they were slow sellers and were soon discontinued setting off yet another wave of moaning from fans.

Ethan, think you are referring to the Model of 1950 Target Special or something like that, of which the Model 24 was meant to be the reincarnation. Definitely one of my grail guns, but they are bringing very high prices now. Last few I have seen for sale were going in the range of $2500 to $3k.

I don't doubt it. I don't know how long its been since I've attended a show. There's one at Wichita that's big and is usually on the first weekend of March. I may hafta. I wonder how many guns I could scrounge out of the safe to take with me. You're probably right about the designation. Any oldish Smith or Colt is bringing outrageous prices now.

I've had more than a few 44 Specials over the years. Going back to the 80's I had a couple of Colt SAA's. Still kicking myself for letting them go. Back in those days we had no idea how high they would go. I've even had Taurus 44 Specials, 431's and 441's. For a Taurus they are very nice guns and I've had a few of them and not had a bad one. Even had a S&W 696 and they are a nice gun. I don't know how many Charter Arms I've had but several. I still have one as a truck gun. They are probably the weakest of the 44 specials. I'm pretty smitten with my Ruger Flattop SS 4-5/8", it's certainly a nice gun and easy to carry. One of my easiest ones to shoot and carry is a Ruger GP100 3". Don't see me getting rid of the last two, or even 3 of them. I like the big hole theory in a gun. No one wants to be shot with one. They feel like you've got something more substantial in your hand.

Smith and Wesson Model 1950 Target with the rare 5" barrel....

Back in the mid-1980s when Smith reintroduced the 24 and then the stainless 624 I was a dealer and ended up with all six...3.5/4/6.5 in both blue and stainless... The only one I really loved was the 24 with the 3.5" barrel....all are long gone replaced by .41s...but really a .44 Special with proper loads will do 99% of what needs to get done with a revolver...

Second place for me would be a Freedom Arms 97...just was just made for .44 Special....

Ruger GP100 in the 3" would be my choice.

But my brother found a Triple Lock for me that I've not yet taken possession of. It may beat out the Ruger.

I don’t know if the Triple Lock is any better than the 2nd model, it’s gotta be at least as good, if so it’ll be pretty badass.

I need to shoot some pigs with this one. 1932 production 2nd model or Model of 1926.

This one's a Russian, but there's more 44 Specials out there. The cut-off ones made to 4 inches....may not be GOAT, but certainly win the cool contest.

The old models were great guns! The new ones are kinda hit or miss. Sold my last one because it was a little too loose. But I’ll own another someday when I find the right one.

The four foot black powder flame out the front and two twin two footers out the sides at dusk is well worth the cleanup time. grin
