The demise of Remington has been greatly exaggerated IMHO. Their current CNC actions are the best they've ever made. The 700 also has more go fast parts for less money than any other rifle in the history of mankind. Might a new one need a little TLC? Perhaps...but they can also be had for $385. If you cant torque action screws, check feed function or bed the action of a stock, id borrow the outfitters gun. There is nothing you can buy under 5g that id be OK with walking into the alders with, without working the bugs out LOL.

I noticed the inventory of Remingtons were quite low at the Sportsmans warehouse(Roanoke). I asked the salesman and was told that Remington quality had gone downhill. Heck even the not so local gunshops I frequent have Kimber Montana 338, Model 70 338, Ruger 375 and Weatherby 340's . Its not just Remingtons quality that has gone down the crapper. Ive seen abortive specimens from BACO by the crate, Savage, and even Kimber. Read up on Forbes, Montana Rifle Co., LAW etc. and those guns arnt cheap. We live in a day and age of garbage brought to market. Anything you buy will need some bugs worked out unless your incredibly lucky in my honest opinion.

Remington continues to suffer from quality issues and knowledgeable folks know this, thus poor sales, thus few on the shelves for sale. The difficulty in locating a m700 doesn't surprise me. As for 338, most folks hunt deer and very few use a 338, thus the difficulty in locating a rifle chambered in 338. Gunshops that want to stay in business sell what the average Joe wants. Sadly. It ain't a m700 or a 338 win. Just my theory, ymmv. I have a 1976 m700 bdl, an excellent rifle in every respect.

Seems like a good opportunity to get a good rifle such as a Ruger or Winchester.

I haven't bought a firearm from a local gun shop in decades. But I feel like I've kept a few in business with my transfer fees. I've ordered several from Bud's and Whittaker guns. I'm still a M700 fan. But prefer Fieldcraft, Forbes, and Kimber.....in that order.

Kodiak Brown Bear? Who cares about Remington doing a face plant, because the obvious choice is Winchester Model 70 Extreme Weather in 338WM.

The only bolt action rifles I see at my local gun stores are the Ruger American type price point rifles, the clerks tell me they dont handle any quality/heirloom type bolt action rifles cause they dont sell, the vast majority of rifle buyers will buy the cheapest rifle they can get their hands on..period.....Hb

My local GS doesn’t stock Remington rifles either. Stating the same reasons. The do shotguns though. The remingtons I’ve seen lately gave me no reason not to like them. They seemed well put together. The issue I have seen is there are other companies making quality firearms for less money than Remington.

I haven't visited a local gun counter in many years. I have all the rifles I could want. Well until I just found out last week I drew a Kodiak Brown Bear tag....... So the search is on. I went to every one of my local gun departments to see if anyone had a 338 win or larger in stock. No shock there as they didn't. This is Montana of all places, a medium bore isn't really sought after up here. But when I started asking what we could order, this is where the shock came.
Not one of the 7 shops I went to even brought up a Remington. Upon further investigation, between the 7 shops only 8 Remington bolt rifles could be found on the shelves.
I asked each shop why and all 7 stated quality control and issues with Remington service. Each shop told me they wouldn't order one if I wanted unless i understood i was taking the flier chance.
Have they really gone this far in the toilet? If this is a snap shot across the country, where are they selling there rifles!!! I would agree with you the most of the local shops around my neck of the woods do not have new Remington rifles for sale, unless you go to Dick's or Walmart. Over the years I have gotten to know two owners quite well and I have heard both say that guns won't pay the bills. Guns are just to get you to come in the shop. The margins are small on firearm sales. I would imagine these shops in your area like mine are trying to give good customer service, so they offer to ship something back or take it off your hands when it is defective. If they do that too many times, it will start to hurt the business. So I would assume they would stop offering the problem child guns for sale.

I own 1 Remington rifle currently. It is a Model Seven CDL in 7mm-08. It is a decent rifle.
That said, due to their failure to acknowledge problems with their triggers for decades, along with their lame attempt to sell junk (710 and 770 to name a few), I personally wouldn't buy another one. I'd much rather buy a Tikka, Ruger (MK/II model), Winchester 70, Weatherby or Howa rifle. YMMV

I spent the afternoon yesterday in a good size gun store yesterday. Must have had six or seven Remington 700's in my hands and the fit and finish was just fine on all of them. Triggers did need work.
