My supply of .22LR ammo is starting to dwindle, which fortunately means I'm almost done with my Remington Golden Bullet bulk pack stuff I thought was a great deal when I first discovered it. I don't want to buy any more, but am interested in both the Federal bulk HP, and the Winchester X-pert HP. Does anyone have some high volume experience with either of these two? Some of my friends swear by American Eagle as an accurate and clean economy ammo. I've also read that everyone seems to love Winchester Power Points, but I haven't seen any for sale since learning about them.

I want to stock up on the cleanest and most accurate ammo I can for the $, before the prices take another hike. I'd like to stay in the $10 or less per brick range if that's reasonable. The ammo will be used for both ground squirrels and general .22LR merriment. I realize certain guns prefer certain ammo, and I'm willing to experiment with some of my guns, but for bulk of my stockpile I'd like to keep it simple and stick with one good brand. Any thoughts?

I found that several of my 22's like Winchester Wildcat and I bought several cases of it and it shoots good enough to kill groundhogs at 100 yds with head shots. I have several rds of Federal Lighting which is good in some of the other rifles. When I got these they were $.65 per box! I have been playing with the remy subsonic and so far they shoot good but are more expensive.

Thanks James. I've used a lot of Wildcat back when the local Mart sold it for cheap. I have no complaints. The bulk pack HPs seem to have eclipsed it as the price leaders in recent years, and the HP feature seems like a good thing for the same money if all other factors are equal.

I bought a case of Rem golden bullets and have been very satisfied with them. I've probably got a few thousand left, but just because I don't have time to shoot them, and when I do shoot with my target guns, I like to use match ammo.

Winchester is good ammo. I'm not particular, and have no favorites in .22 ammo for general purpose, but if you talk it up, you can buy a case of bulk (5600 rounds, I think) for a do-right price.

Why do you want to buy another brand? Were you unhappy with the Rem. Golden bullet performance? I have found them to be the best .22 budget ammo.

Maybe I stumbled into a bad lot, but I've never had the same accuracy levels attained with other eco-brands, and can even hear varied muzzle repoorts from the same box and same gun. I've tried sorting by weight and rim thickness and that didn't really help the accuracy, and it doesn't burn as clean as Wildcat does. Some friends have had similar results, and most of them have switched to American Eagle for high volume squirrel shooting. Don't know if Remington just had a bad hair day, or if this is normal, but I'm not anxious to stock up and take the risk.

I really like Winchester PowerPoints but I can only sometimes find them at gunshows. Walmart carries Win Dynapoints and it is the best cheap bulk ammo that my 10-22 will shoot.

We like the Dynapoints best if they can be found, settle for Powerpoints usually though.

I buy American Eagle. It shoots really straight, but it is now 14 bucks for 400 rounds. I bought it at 10 bucks for 400 rounds in December.

Don't know if you have a Bi-Mart in your area, but the do have Federal Ammo on sale starting today for less than $10.00 a box. I believe there is like 525 per box bulk pack.

Yeah, I saw the Federal on sale at my BiMart. Am Eagle is only $1.5 more per box (for 400), and Win X-pert is about $11 a box. The sale is what got me thinking in the first place.

Just bought 2100 rounds of the Federal stuff today. I'll see how accurate and clean it is.

If you're seeking accuracy, you need to buy a box of everything that's available in your area. It's like testing handloads in a centerfire.
My TC Classic semiauto is the only .22 I own that prefers CCI Mini mags. Others have all preferred other brands. The accuracy difference between brands can be dramatic, but what works best in one barrel can be a loser in another.
Of course, real match .22's usually work well in every gun.

Me too - and before I decideded I tried ~ 10 different brands/types of ammo. That side by side comparison was years ago though so maybe things have changed....

That's very true if you only have one rifle. I've probably got a dozen or more 22 rifles, so I have to settle on something for "mass consumption."

For accuracy in my tighter-shooting guns, I'll test ammo and buy a couple of bricks of what works best in my really accurate .22s.

Try everything, sometimes its surprising what will shoot well. having said that, I've had great luck with many .22 using the ordinary Federal Target loads. I've got a 77/22 that shoots amazingly well with them and others that shoot them quite well.

When I bought my CZ 452 I wanted a rifle that would shoot bullets that I could purchase at ANY Walmart anywhere..

both the Federal 36 grain 550 Packs.. and the Winchester 36 grain Lead shoot great in that rifle and my son's couple of 10/22s.. the Winchester is in a 500 round pack..

Both are under $10.00...

Anything but Remington Thunderbolts!

American Eagle is not to bad price, decent accuracy, but lower count per box pricing strategy.

The federal mild carton blues are good.
