Skinning out an elk for me is a laborious process without a skinning knife with sufficient curve/belly. Any recommendations on a fixed blade knife/sheath for my backpack would be appropriated. Vintage, new, or custom works but I'm on a budget so no crazy stuff. Thank sin advance.

This is what I use to skin with. It's a three blade set, and trades blades as needed. It works well for me, I have no complaints. It is considered "vintage" which surprised me since it was new when I bought it. There is one set available right now, and it's cheap. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Kershaw-Al...de-Knife-3-Blade-Combo-Set-/273759631822

Will that skin a whole elk before needing the blade replaced or sharpened?

Blades look like they’re marked “Made in Japan”. Probably pretty good steel.

Have you seen the Knives of Alaska "Caribou" and "Light Hunter"? KOA CaribouKOA Light HunterBoth are D2 steel, Light Hunter is 0.25" thick steel and pretty stout, the Caribou is 0.10" thinner stock (lighter, probably better for packing). I bought a Light Hunter years ago, but haven't actually used it yet (seemed like a good idea at the time )

The man said he was on a budget, and they work. I've been using them for probably 20 years. They've earned a favorable mention.

I have a Tim Olt for sale in the classifieds that would do well skinning out an elk (without sharpening). Hard to beat as a working knife and I'm just about to drop the price.
Good luck in your quest.

How about a price point so this doesn't turn into a pissing match? No issues here. Just offered up a choice for OP, nothing more.
