Going on a black bear hunt spring of 2020 on the coastal side of BC. Shots can be anywhere from 100 ( or less) yards up to 300 yards. I would like a scope for these varied distances. Considering a Leupold VX-6 2-12 , a Nikon Monarch 3-12 or ? No more than 3 x on the bottom but prefer a power of less such as a 2x for close distance. Suggestions ?

I put at Swarovski 2.5-10x42 30mm PH on mine and never wanted for more or less scope. That one is probably pretty dated by now, but then so am I and it always seemed about the perfect scope for what I've used it for. The varmint guys tell me heat the heat mirage gets worse way out there at over ten x, but you are probably not shooting real long range at bears anyway. The bears that we hunted in the Midwest always showed up at last light and out of dense evergreen cover, so a good low light scope would be worth having.

My 7 mag has a leupold 3.4-10X. Works great for my use, out to 400 or so yards

An outrageous scope would be a Swarovski z8i 2.3-18X56. One of the best scopes I have compared.

Samplelist has a Meopta R1r 3-12x56 Demo for $749. You aren’t going to beat that glass especially at that price. They had two til I grabbed one of them yesterday.

I've never needed more than a 2.5x8 Leupold for those distances. When hiking mountains, every ounce saved makes a difference!

I will check out all the above mentioned scopes and I think the illuminated fire dot would be an asset also for what I am using the gun/scope for.

Still thinking and checking out all the options ! Just getting back into this sport/hobby again and I suppose I have a mental roadblock regarding a scope brand I have never heard of ! ( Meopta)

I think I have it narrowed down between the Meopta Meostar 1.7-10 iIIluminated 42 and the Meostar 2-12 illuminated 50. Will I be able to detect much of a difference in low light conditions between these two scopes ? Enough to justify weight difference between them ? Price difference ? From what I have read eye relief is the same for both. I do wear progressive tri-focal glasses now so perhaps I need to make a trip to Bass Pro, etc to make sure there is no problem looking through the scope.

That's what's on my 7 mag, but I still haven't fired it. Beautiful scope.
