As I see it, the problem with health care costs in the U.S. is private insurance. If the Federal Government was the only non-profit insurance provider, costs would go down.

Wife had another biopsy in February. Hell, I was in there while they were doing it. Big needle, ultra-sound. That was $5500.

The hospital can put whatever astronomical figure they desire in the left hand column
However theyre only going to get the pre-negotiated contractural figure/rate. (On a pre-certified procedure of in-network participant facilites and physicians)
Just recently, on one of my EOBs from a common chest x-ray. Vanderbilt billed $1,400ish. My blue cross preferred paid them only $92.
I didn't even get co-insurance balance on that.

I guess mine was the bargain version. The first attempt to put my stent in back in Aug thru the arm with a single catheter was a fail, bill was about $23,000, my share was $1500. The second procedure was last month, two catheters/two arteries up thru groin, in and out in one day, $3000 bill and my copay was $30, and this time they were successful.

Glad I got tricare and the VA ( for all they are worth) I have never seen anything other than 30 dollar co pays for tricare. Have never paid for prescriptions
Have had alot of schit done spinal wise since my auto accident last year.
Never used Tricare prior to that since retiring in 2008 I know the wife and 3 daughters growing up Always doctor this, dentist that, orthodontist this... I just never paid much attention to it.
All the medical system does is annoy the fugg outta me Reexplain this and that Call people to do their job scheduling schit multiple times. Always having to check up on em it seems or they drop the ball. Call for fugging referrals to be approved and be telephone relay between them and doctors offices . Doing telephonic coordination to make sure others do their job in a prompt manner and not when they feel like getting around to it.
Fugging 16 yr old girl that caused the auto accident has caused me spinal problems and caused me to be a medical coordination and scheduling secretary.
Fugging schitt pisses me off to no end.....
Not looking forward to Medicare in conjunction with it. Know a bunch of you mil retired guys over 65 have figured it out. Gonna go up to the RSO on FTCKY when the time comes.
Did any of you mil retired guys start collecting Social security at 62 like I plan too in 6 yrs.
Did ya have ta go on Medicare and use tricare for life at that point at age 62 or was ya GTG till 65 and then had too?

Three weeks ago Wednesday had to have a pacemaker installed. Overnight in hospital the total billed amount was $ 77,000.00 with pacemaker being $ 41,000.00 of the total. With managed care discount the total cost was $ 25,000.00. If you do not have good insurance at least in Texas good medical care is hard to obtain.

Yeah...riiiiiight. Every private/commercial insurer is in the business to make a profit. Every private/commercial insurance carrier has its own rules, so healthcare providers need to bill them all differently in order to maximize the amount of compensation that they can earn. A single payer would eliminate much of the forced complexity in the system and healthcare providers could reduce their costs by streamlining the billing operations.

I didn't even get co-insurance balance on that. Wife and I look at lots of the bills that come in. There is the amount they bill, the amount they settle for (what insurance has determined) and any copays. Some of the stuff is astoundingly high, others I don't know how they make ends meet ($6.00 X ray). And we are supposed to shop for hospitals? We go where the surgeon or whoever practices. Maybe if I was looking for a hair transplant I would shop, but most of this stuff is more or less life/death.

So what exactly is your part after the dust settles?
10% ?? I have to pay a little over a grand, not to bad for being able to stay upright. So how much did the insurance co. pay? There is probably no way you can find out. You can be sure they didn't pay anywhere near $41k, but the hospital would have tried to squeeze that out of you if you didn't have insurance. And they would have used that much for a write-off if you were not able to pay. Jerry

Might sound good in theory, but the outcome is a guaranteed failure. Whether you want to call it socialized medicine or not, that's what it is. No forking thank you.
