It is ironic that Skull Bound TV just had an episode on how much work actually goes into baiting bear. It is a major PITA! And expensive. No doubt it is. But I won't confuse the work of baiting with the satisfaction of a bear hunt on their terms. Get off your high horse and stop being elitist. You obviously don't read anything else on this thread. How is it not on their terms? What terms do bears have? Seems to me Bears eat when and where they want to. If my bait is where they want to eat and it is legal light, I have hunted them on their terms.

The two times I hunted bear, I went because of the guys that would be on the hunt or would be guiding.
First hunt: Got a bear on the third day with hounds,
Second hunt: Hunted hard for 7 days, spot and stalk, no kill.
Enjoyed the second hunt more than the first due to my hunting partner, guide and the family that hosted us. Did not see a bear but it was an unforgettable experience

I used to always pick up a black bear tag when I was doing fall elk and deer hunts in Idaho. However, I've never even seen a bear let alone get a shot at one!

I hunt bears for something to do in the spring, trap them for the hides and skulls, and to gain whatever points I can get from my neighbours who are for the most part of the opinion that the only good bear is a dead bear. Keeping them nervous keeps everyone happier. I've also noticed that bears eat the same things I do, and thinning out the competition is its own reward

Feeding them garbage and shooting them while they eat it degrades bears and hunters both.

As most folks around the Siskiyous, it's routine to kill 'em and walk away. We see too many little fawn hooves in the shat piles. Then, this year an old guy insisted I try his 'corned, smoked bear'. Excellent. He took large muscle groups, cut them to uniform thickness, brined them just as with beef. Rubbed on some pepper... Let them dry enough to form a pellicle, and put them in warm smoke for a day or two. He recommended a bitter wood such as oak or broadleaf maple. Kind of like pastrami, but good in beans and stew or just sliced thin. Better than just walking away.
Well this is a fine pickle we're in, should'a listened to Joe McCarthy and George Orwell I guess.

Bears are special and deserve to be respected as such. Feeding them garbage and shooting them while they eat it degrades bears and hunters both. Bears are special? Now there is a pecking order of game animals? You bring stupid to all new levels. So if I shoot a bear over berries or fish eating, it is ok but not over a bait? How does it degrade a hunter or a bear? There are places where bears numbers need to be controlled and near impossible to hunt with the use of bait or dogs. You really need to educate yourself.

Here we go again with an elitist that feels the need to push his ethics/morals on to everyone else. No, bears aren’t special, they are special to you, to another they could be an overgrown varmint. I have no desire to shoot a bear over bait, but who the hell am I or you to say it’s wrong? Not sure what’s in the water in Oregon but it grows the stupid pretty good in some. You either get it or you don't, and you, do not.
