Looks great! (I have to battle to see that the potatoes have enough moisture to be easily spreadable around here.)

I usually make Cajun shepherds pie, similar to the standard, but with some seasoning for some more flavor. One of my favorite dishes with ground venison. I typically use both peas and corn.

I brown a couple of pounds of meat with a chopped onion, drain fat, add a cup if red wine a little tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, peas and carrots and cook down for a few, sprinkle with flour, add 2 cups of chicken stock, cook till a nice thick gravy.
The put in a pan and cover with the mashed and back.
The wine and thyme really makes it. It won't be all dry with the added liquids.

Ground meat (beef, elk, etc) + veggies of choice, can of diced tomatoes, +/- roasted green chili, choice of spices, top with the Bisquick recipe, bake.

Not big on ground lamb.
I like the one made with ground beef.

always plain vanilla. ground round, s&p, thyme, veg-all mixed veggies (peas, corn, potatoes?, carrots), mashed taters on top, brown it and eat it.
it'll stick to ya ribs, easy to make & nutritious.
and actually it's cheap enough.

I'm guessing the more flavorless and dry appeals to the mid westerners.

Our version. It's good. Elk. Awesome grub! The wife makes the same with elk/deer burger, tatter tots, peas, carrots, onion, cheese and whatever else she sneaks into it. Always makes for a delicious meal and leftovers. Good food! 😎

A girlfriend who was originally from MN introduced me to Shepherd's Pie.
That was over three decades ago and I haven't eaten it since.
It dam near soured me on mashed potato's too but fortunately I discovered Bangers and Mash.

You are correct! in order to be Shepard's pie, it must contain Sheep meat, hence, sheep herders pie! capt david
