Seems pretty dead, although it will always probably have a following for custom rifles.
Can't say it ever made much sense to me.

Last one I saw was a kimber 84. I thought it had the makings of a fine grained wood stocked "short range" gun. With a 1-6x scope it would be a nice gentleman timber gun. Sort of an "anti-cool" elk gun. But alas, 338 fed is in a dark corner crying into its beer. Right there next to 338 marlin express.

Some cartridge and caliber segments, particularly those with more specialist usage for the serious hunter, are much harder to invade and infiltrate and .338 caliber is one of the best examples.
What is needed or what is adequate does not correlate with what is wanted.

I'd guess that it is indeed dead, reloaders excluded of course. I've never seen one in a gun store, but have a bud in Wyoming who won't shoot anything else.

I always thought that it would make a good little cartridge for hunting whitetails/bear/hogs in the eastern US, but no improvement over the .358 Win. memtb

Can't say it ever made much sense to me. The only place it made any sense to me was in an AR-10 platform. It didn't offer any advantages over existing cartridges in a bolt gun.

Yes, Savage currently shows 6 rifles they chamber in .338 Federal. That being said, they only rifle outside of an AR platform I have seen for it was a Ruger Hawkeye SS two winters ago on clearance at Wal-Mart. I almost bought it but decided not to.

The market for such rounds has always been limited and when the demand gets filled, they fade until the next wave of enthusiasm comes along. Neat little cartridge, but offers nothing over it's parent for the majority of deer, black bear, and pig hunters, which is to say, most of us. If one winds YOUR clock, go for it. This is all fun and games you know.
What fresh Hell is this?

Anyone currently chambering rifles for the 338 federal? Savage? I'm the happy owner of a stainless Hawkeye in 338 FED, part of a 3 rifles set, the others being chambered in 223 and 6.5 CM.

dead...yes it is. Perfectly useful...but so are many many other dead cartridges.
It was an answer to a question that nobody asked.

A member here just had me build one on a Montana, Lilja modified contour. Big ol hole saves a bit of weight.

I love the cartridge and wish it was offered in the Barrett Fieldcraft. But I can’t imagine they’d sell too many of them.

I’ve never seen a gun or ammo in stores for it. As soon as I have money for a NULA though, I’m debating between 338 Fed and 257 Rob
