I saw a rather interesting model 70 today at a gun show. It was a 270, and the marking on the barrel was Model 70 Carbine. The barrel was 20" long. The "checkering" on the buttstock and forestock was different than any I had seen before. It was fairly deeply cut and not real close patterned. It looked to be in pretty fair shape, and the price wasn't bad by Canadian standards. Obviously, this is not a pre 64, but does anyone have any info on when Winchester marketed these "carbines" and what their general usability is.
Figured someone here would know more about it than I did.

Model 70 Lightweight Carbine made from 1984 to 1987 in various calibers. 20 inch barrel. SInce Winchester was sold I wouldn't want to put a value on it. Seems like the values went up since the sale.

I have the same rifle in 30-06. I found mine in a pawn shop right after word starting to leak out about Winchester closing. I paid $300 for mine. I've shot it at the range a few times and it is pretty accurate. With a low powerd scope it should be a great brush gun. It is actually lighter in weight than a Marlin 30-30.

This guy was asking $525 Cdn for it, and that is about $450 USD. I likely could have got it for around $400 USD, but I question the reasoning behind a 20" tube on a 270. Nice looking rifle though, and in like new condition. I didn't buy it. Still got the major hankering for a 6.5x55. Thanks.
One further ?? What was the year POST 64 when Winchester made decent rifles again? And how do you know by serial #'s when that started?
Appreciated your time.
