The rock chucks are out and I've about got the loading room in my new house all set up and running. I dusted off an old favorite rifle that Jim See built for me about 12 years ago.

It's an 8 twist brux light Palma interrupted fluted on a trued Rem action. I used to always use 105 amaxes for rock chucks and the rifle was throated to kiss those at 2.80". I've also killed deer with it using 105 Berger vlds. I really liked the 105 hornady match bthp too but amaxes always seemed to give a little more pop early in on varmints.

Should I just go to the 108 eld m or is there a better high bc soft bullet with early upset? I really like 105 g high bc 6mms as a dual purpose long range big game and varmint bullet. I tried some different 115s a few years back but I didn't think they hung with the 105s.

I'm just going to keep using the hornady match 105 bthp's for game but I'd like to find something to replace my old favorite 105 Amax varmint load. I have some 108 elds I'll try first but I know there's some other new bullets to try. Any other good fast opening heavy 6mm bullets out now?

I load and shoot a 6 Creedmore for precision matches. I have very good results with the bullets that you mentioned. One bullet I would suggest is the 103 ELDX for your application. My favorite is the 105 BTHP for precision matches. My gun shoots them less than 1/2 MOA. I use H4350 powder for all bullets in the 6 CM.

My favorite is the 105 Amax.....just because I have a crapload of them.

Now buying 108 ELD's here and there, but haven't used any of those yet.

Berger 105 hybrids are really good. Easy to load, accurate, and good on game performance. I kill everything with it. 41 grains of h4350 gives about 3000 fps in my 243.

Until it was discontinued several years ago, I liked the Speer 105 spitzer for my .240 Wby. Not a target bullet but my rifle really liked them...😊

Matrix 105 gets my vote, been shooting it all winter at dogs with great results!

During a six day cull hunt I was able to shoot a number of Springbucks everywhere from 200 to 600 yds, most of the shots within a 300/450 yd window.

I made a side by side comparison of 105gr Berger VLD Hunting and Hornady A-Max bullets.

Not one Berger stayed inside, not one, while one out of every three or four A-Maxes did. All were carefully picked boadside, or almost, shots.

Both bullets were efficient killers but the number of "dead right theres" with the VLDs doubled those of the A-Maxes.

When they run after a lung/heart shot, they did for a similar distance.

When they run after a lung/liver shot, the distance covered by those shot with VLDs was, roughly, 50% longer than the ones shot with the A-Maxes.

Gun was a Blaser K95 Kipllauf, and bullets were loaded in Norma cases with IMR 7828 SSC and BR2 primers. Muzzle speed was 3,000 fps even.

Did you ever try the 105 Berger hybrid?

I guess this is negative reinforcement, but neither the 103gr Hornady ELD-X factory ammo, nor my handloads with the same bullet shot very well in my 6mm Fieldcraft. One of their techs told me they use the 108gr ELD-M for the accuracy test. I only tried one powder, I4350, assuming the factory stuff was using Superformance.

May try them with H4350, which did well with 95gr TTSXS, but am looking to go heavier, maybe 115gr Bergers, for hunting this season.

No, only de regular 105gr VLD Hunting, I would not expect a big difference performance-wise, though.

Maybe not... Springbucks are small animals, with a soft skin and a light bone structure that offers very smallresistance upon impact. In them, AMaxes tended to expand earlier, and produce more damage, a shallower more bomblike sort of damage which, on not so well placed shots, could kill faster. On well placed shots, a bullet that goes through fast enough, damaging both sides (right and left) of the animal vital system, might be a faster killer.
Could be something like that, or maybe not, but in any case that is what I observed.

Gophers pops are far from bear! we have made it way off subject. Personally the 80s https://www.sierrabullets.com/product/6mm-243-caliber-80-gr-blitz-sbt/ make the pop! Also the 70 tnt and 70grain bt.

If bear is on the list the 105 Hornady is marginal. This little guy caught a well placed 105 and went 100 yards before finding my wall.

But gophers well the 70 bt is nasty

Not 105's but sierra 95 gr. tipped matchkings bc .500 is a very good varmint bullet about as expolsive as a heavier 6mm bullet gets.

The 105 HPBT and 108 ELD are my favourites. The 105 is 95% of what the 108 is, for 50% of the money.

For flat out accuracy the 107gr Sierra Match King has been my favorite long range rock chuck bullet. for more explosive results I like the Berger 95gr VLD hunting

The 107 Sugar,is a touch slicker than the Hornie 105. It's just nice to shoot a single boolit,with a single zero and not fret either the near or the far. Using PV,the Sugar is $158.28 per (500) and the Hornie HPBT $100.47 for a like many. Congratulations?!?

It's nice that when using the same boolit,that one nets a $115+ credit,per every 1000 trigger pulls,which equates to barrels being free.

Hey Burleyboy chucks are one of my favorite things to hunt. I used to shoot Noslers at then in my 243 and while they popped okay it wasn't that exciting. I sold that good shooter to my buddy for his wife, but am now wanting one again. I've read that the 87 VMAX's were awesome but the BC's were all that high IMO. How do you rate the 105 AMX's vs the 87 VMAXs? I'm building a 260 AI specifically for long range chucks and targets. But considering getting another 243 win barrel and matbe even a 22-250 or 22-2350 AI to screw on also. I'm over in Eastern Oregon and my area just doesn't have the numbers you Idahoans seem to have. Roadtrip!

I wish I had a few more 105 amaxes on hand. Some lots did better for my than others and my better lots are running low. The 105 vld did fine on deer and exited on the ones I shot with it but didn't usually give me the early upset on chuck's the amax does.

I've pretty much dropped the vld in favor of the 105 match bthp which shoots great especially for the price. I have yet to shoot a deer with the match bthp but I'm pretty sure it will work. The match hasn't given me the early upset the amax does either. I'll give the 108s a go on the chucks this spring.

The amax and bthp both shoot to almost the same poa so it's been a good combo. If the 108 does the same I'll go 108s and the bthp. Time to get a 22 creedmoor build for 88s going and give the old 243 some time off.

I love the 105 Hornie BTHP in everything from 270 to 6-284/6-06 and it hammers Critters happily,throughout that velocity spectrum.

Stocked up on these as they shoot into 0.5" at 3145 from my Ruger No. 1 6mm Rem. I know, I know, there are better bullets but, this load works for me.

The 105's group better than the Amax in my 6C FC.

I will continue to shoot the Amax's in my 6x47 Chunk until the supply runs dry and then look at the 105's and ELD's.
