I've got a spotting scope that has some rips in the outer rubber casing, doesn't have a case or tripod, and is a 15-40x. I am going to buy it from a friend and was wondering what the approximate value would be. Thanks for any input.

$100.00-$135.00. STP was clearing them out last fall NIB with tripod and padded case for $219.00...

If he's a real friend, he'll tell you why he's selling it... All kidding aside, I'd try it at the range a time or two and if you like it, buy it for whatever you feel is a fair price. Personally, I've never found a low budget spotting scope to be a worthwile investment. With the Bushnell spacemaster being the only option, I'd upgrade my scope or save for a better spotter if I were in your shoes. If you're patient, you can usually find a very good deal on a better quality make/model. Heck, just shadow GreatWaputi for a little while and you'll have one fall in your lap for sure....
Biden's most truthful quote ever came during his first press conference, 03/25/21. Drum roll please...... "I don't know, to be clear." and THAT is one promise he's kept!!!

I have one of the 15-45x Spacemasters. It's not a bad scope for the money, other than the tripod is kind of filmsy when you're at high magnification and the wind is blowing. As far as resolution, seeing .22 cal sized bullet holes on white paper targets at 200 yards can be pretty tough, unless the conditions are perfect. Using something like Shoot-N-See targets, however, makes it easy to stretch the workable range a lot further.

Seeing .22 caliber holes in paper at 200 yards can sometimes be tough for any scope no matter how well it resolves and image. Magnification, unfortunately, magnifies EVERYTHING... even the stuff you dont want magnified like mirage.
