All: I just emailed the seller. Before I get a response back, let’s have a little vote tally. I say compass. https://www.gunbroker.com/Item/803906751

Sure looks like it. Poor pic? Description? You’d think a “gunsmith” would disclose such a thing. I don’t have a rifle that points North.

I remember not very many years ago (less than 10) you could have bought a really nice 300 F and/or 308 F for $500, nice 243's $650 or so and nice 250's and 358's were $800. I've had them all except the 358. Still have a 250. Had a beautiful minty 300 I sold for $600. Wish I had that one back.
Definitely has a compass in the stock. Just like Ralphie's Daisy Red Rider in "The Christmas Story"

I think it's a compass also. That or an on-off switch for phaser activation.

This listing is a teachable moment as well.
What in particular, someone might ask?
That substantial details can be omitted in a description. Whether purposely or not, is another issue.

Look's like he lost the extractor pin or hit it in too far while giving it his expert cleaning.

I think its a compass. Those things always point north as long as you keep your gun facing north but then all bets are off if you happen to turn to the east. Then they don't point north anymore. Go figure? You think a modern equivalent would be carving out a notch big enough for inletting a smart phone with a compass ap? Maybe Marbles should bring out a smart phone so someone could give it a try.

I can make you a pattern to route a cavity to hold your iPhone. All you need is a plunge router and a minty EG to practice on. (Actually a pristine pre-64 M70 would be better- no stock bolt to get in the way of the bit spinning at 20,000rpm's.) Compasses? "All Savage-carrying hunters who wander are not lost." (with apologies to J.R.R.Tolkien) (Yeah, it was another sleepless night.)

I have a Remington 725 in .280 (the rarest of all of the factory chamberings) with the same issue. Why would you inlet a little round compass into the comb of a stock?

It also looks like there is some wood missing behind the compass, like it was gouged. And the pistol grip cap looks to be larger than the wood.
