Dam that’s a big bear. Anymore pics? In Montana, dogs and baiting are not legal. The challenge of spot and stalk on a old black bear, is as good as it gets. Something I look forward to every spring.

I keep waiting to see some of the more accomplished bear hunters on here post some tips on how to whittle out some of them beautiful shrimp looking cuts. Does it take a shrimp knife? Or can you get by with a bear knife? To get the bear, do you 'bait' it...or 'chum' it? Sigh, so many questions.
Well this is a fine pickle we're in, should'a listened to Joe McCarthy and George Orwell I guess.

Spring of 2015. You can see his bottom lip is tore away, and had healed up. Probably a fighting scar from another large boar. The following spring I found another big one within a mile of where I killed this one with about an hour of shooting light left. I made a play on him, but never got my eye on him again. I bumped a small bunch of elk on the stalk, and figured that's why he wasn't in view when I got close to where he'd been earlier... I didn't see him in 2017, or last spring. I'm betting he's still around. I'll be back for another try in about a month..;)
Luck....is the residue of design...

You know how John Steinbeck described Montana?

You know how John Steinbeck described Montana? As everything you'd think Texas would be after listening to Texans.

Bears are good to eat and can be hunted by spot and stalk as well as other methods. Tastes like chicken

The OP is definitely a troll. And in all likelihood a scammer: https://www.24hourcampfire.com/ubbt.../13670235/romanian-psl-rfle#Post13670235Broken English aside, "his" posts were all made in a couple of days, one-liners, and then started trolling and scamming. It is good to read this thread and, despite some name calling, see folks come together in a real conversation. I'll say that I learned a bit about bear hunting over bait. Personal choices notwithstanding, I won't beat people up for legally hunting as they see fit. "Judge not lest ye be judged," and all that. I believe that we can all agree that baiting Oremi would be ethical and called for.

Fireball, a question for my own curiosity. Are you a member of BHA by chance? Again, just curious.

Why do people hunt bears? People hunt bears for the same reason they hunt anything else. It provides food, recreation, keeps predators in check, helps ungulate populations, black bear populations are extremely healthy, etc.
Why is bait used? Baiting is an effective management tool. Bait reduces the potential for accidental killing of sows with cubs. A hunter can spend time watching the bear before squeezing the trigger at first opportunity like incidental kills or even some spot and stalk. Baiting helps manage the age class being harvested. It's far easier for a hunter to kill a big male by being choosey since bait gives opportunities to see multiple bears inhabiting the area. Bait increases potential for clean kill at close ranges. Not everyone owns dogs and some habitat isn't conducive to spot and stalk.
I've never baited, but clearly understand why some do and the benefits it provides from a management standpoint. Baiting also takes tons of time, effort and gas money. I typically spot and stalk, but certainly don't judge others who bait. When folks start singling out other hunters based on emotion or elitism, it just makes it easier for antis to condemn the entire sport. I try not to fall into that trap.
Never posted before...just thought I'd give my 2 cents.
