Wayne VZ has a nice article on elk cartridges in the June Guns Magazine. He's used 36 cartridges on elk including 30/30. Pretty cool and proves you don't need a 338 mag to bring down a bull.

Yeah, we might as well throw everything away and just use 22lr

Nah..... just goes to show you don't need a magnum anything if the range is not waaaay out there.

I would think a 338 would be good. I think he did an article on 33’s some years ago.

Great guy...I corresponded with him here on the Campfire and set up a time to meet him at the NRA meetings in Atlanta so he could autograph a copy of his elk hunting book I had. A very gracious man in person, perfectly willing to talk elk hunting as long as I wanted. I did my best to not monopolize his time though we did talk cartridges after he asked me what I shot. After I responded “338” he was more than complementary of my choice.

WVZ has a ton of common sense and like most of us has used a bit of everything on elk, understands and hunts towards his capabilities. Pretty hard to talk poorly about a fella that hammers as many elk as he has in so many different environments.

I would think a 338 would be good. I think he did an article on 33’s some years ago. The 338wm is an excellent choice for elk hunting. That is if you can handle one. And yes, he did do an article on the big 33's in the August 2000 issue of RifleShooter magazine. Page 30 to be exact. That too is a good read. Back then, his exact words for the 338wm: "If there's a quintessential modern elk cartridge, the 338 winchester qualifies"...... By definition, "Quintessential": "representing the most perfect or typical example of a quality or class." According to the online dictionary.

Most anything “will” work....but, the .338 WM is just darn hard to beat for most any situation and at any reasonable game shooting range. And ....with proper bullets, from most any angle! memtb

I've always liked Wayne Van Zwoll's writing and have his book on elk hunting as well as a couple of his other books on shooting. He is a no nonsense type of writer and I've always found his opinions sensible. Speaking as someone whose family comes from there, it's also hard to dislike a guy who thinks the Wallowa Mountains are great.

Wayne VZ is a great writer and hunter. As you know, writers have to talk up many cartridges. But if I’m not mistaken, one of his favorite cartridges is the 7mm Weatherby and has written that. Good fellow and fellow Washingtonian. Happy Trails

Tried unsuccessfully to find a copy locally. What’s the gist of what he had to say? Probably didn’t even mention the 338 Fed I’ll have with me. $#&@ writers

His PhD had a section on that. ;D Just with the library at Utah State had all of the pages of his dissertation while I was there.
