I was at my companies retirement advisor a couple months ago. At that time stock took a dump and the goof wanted me to shift everything into low yield. He said it would not make a difference in the long term.

I’m not in high risk stuff, so don’t make the big bucks in a strong bull market.....but I’m pretty darn happy the way the market has performed since my retirement in September of ‘16! Ours is a blend of stuff, from stocks to bonds, domestic to foreign! memtb

Prudential states my 401k has increased 11% since Jan 01, 2019. Someone is doing something right.

How did it do in December? It’s doing good now, but there are no guarantees.

The idea is to keep as many suckers into the Ponzi scheme as long as possible before it dumps.

How did it do in December? It’s doing good now, but there are no guarantees. I lost a good share, over 50% after 9/11, and watched it slowly grow back over several years. But got nervous just before the last recession and dumped the whole thing into "Stable Value Fund". So I weathered that period in good shape. Then stuck it all back into growth funds just as the tide turned, so it has done well over the last several years. I will probably shift the entire balance back to "Stable Value" just before the 2020 election and see how our Mr Trump does.

Ponzi scheme? It must be a damn good one then if you look at returns since 1925. I am in it for the long haul.

I would find a new advisor pronto. I am locked in TIAA until I turn 59.5. I just went to see when I could retire early. In my opinion all of his advice was for his interest, not mine. He was a BSer, for sure. There was no reason to sell in a dip when I have years to find a peak. Lowest unemployment in 50 years is a good sign. I can ride out my current 1/3 conservative investments for 10 years, so a knee jerk reaction was uncalled for.

My wife is 45 and I’m 48 so we have a while before we retire but we’ve got a blend of about 60/40 stocks to bonds. No high risk just the maximum contribution to the 401k with company matching. We’ve got mostly Vanguard S&P 500 and a little in a similar very low cost Putnam tracking fund. We also have an ever increasing number of shares in company stock. We’re in it for the long haul and have been since we started 20+ years ago.
In 5 years when the last child is in college mom and I will work less and travel and enjoy each other even more, traveling and spending time up north.

The last 2 quarters we were up about 17,000 and change per quarter.
It all depends on where you put your funds.
