I just ordered a very clean Ruger Red Hawk 44 mag from Cabela's,
Its Blue Steel with Rings and Weaver scope, I still can shoot open sights fairly well but age and not getting enough practice time are making it harder. 10 years ago i could hit a pop can at 50 yards nearly every time. Now i miss more than i like.
I do not think there were a whole lot of blue steel redhawks with factory rings made. Am i Wrong ? I want to work up a load with a 210 grain gas Check hard cast Semi Wadcutter, for deer slaying.Do you think that's enough bullet ? Also is the a good holster for a scoped Redhawk you might recommend ?
...thanks...tj3006

I don’t ever remember seeing a blued model with factory rings.

I prefer a 250 gr WFN hardcast LBT bullet for deer and hogs but don’t see any reason why a 210 gr bullet shouldn’t work for deer. That weight works well in a .41 mag.

I have one, though I have never put a scope on it. It gets fed firebreathers 280-350 LBT's, but is right at home with more sedate loads.

Just about any cast bullet of any weight, moderately hard, will zing right through a deer. I would pick one with above average meplat for lung shots and aim for bone if using a Lyman sized meplat semi wadcutter or one of the smallish designs.

I believe Simply Rugged might make a version of their pancake; the std ones are great for packing longer barreled guns out of the way, but ready.

I had one back in the 80's Mine started out without the rings and I had Ruger retrofit with a new barrel which they did for some really cheap price. I miss that gun.

For some years the 7 1/2" Redhawks came milled for scope rings, while the 5 1/2" guns did not. The one 44 I should have kept was an old tight-as-a-drum 5 1/2" blue Redhawk that did a easy 3 1/2" MOA with any good 300 grain bullet and a big dose of H110.

Thanks for the answers !
I might have added that i have 2 model 29s now, and a Marlin also I have shot Bear Tooth 250 gr Keith Style Gas Checks as well as jacketed stuff. I looked at some bullets on line, and there is a gas checked 210 grainer i liked, But the 250s would work great for sure, on any Animal in Oregon, unless i draw a tag for the portland zoo, and they are hard to come by.
Don't really know a bunch about the different bullet shapes, But that 210 looks a bit like an SWC to me, i will try and post a link ! ...tj3006

https://www.montanabulletworks.com/.../DSC3059-2-44Mag-LYMAN-210GR.-SWC-GC.jpg There is a 225 grain swc too and it is a true swc, But this guy traveling at 1600 fps should be great !

Looks like the Lyman 429215, I have one I hollow pointed. It’s been an accurate bullet though I’ve never used it on game. I’m sure it would work fine on deer.

I used a basic 240 SWC at velocities from 1000-1400 fps on Missouri whitetail and could't tell a lick of difference in performance on game. You poke them through the shoulders at the spine and they are going on the ground to stay. I see no reason why a 25 grain lighter SWC wouldn't do it just as well.

Had one just like it but stainless back in the 1980s... Had a 4X Leupold scope on the barrel...very accurate rig.

Favorite deer slayer was the Sierra 180 JHC with 30 grains of H110...ran 1743 fps...deer can not get to the ground fast enough... Is Gary Reeder's favorite deer bullet...

Last deer was a 6-point coming almost straight in...hit in chest, turned the heart to Jello along with most of the lungs and broke the last two ribs going out...the bullet is built tough....

I thought if it was milled for rings, it was a Super Redhawk....and non-milled with open sights was a Redhawk.

The SuperRedhawk and Redhawk are two different designs altogether.

That is nice!

I've owned both, prefer the Redhawk, mainly for aesthetic reasons.

To me it is one of the most appealing revolvers. I like the grip, and find it handles recoil better than the SuperBlackhawk.

I sold both my Redhawk and Super Redhawk (both 7.5") and kept a 4.62" SuperBlackhawk. I fully intend to buy a 5.5" Redhawk when I run across one.

My first Redhawk was a blued gun, 7-1/2 inch barrel, with Ruger's barrel/rib ring-mounts. Good setup. That's the first handgun I killed a deer with. 225 grain Speer jacketed SWC-HP.

I found it hard to shoot offhand scoped single action so when I had the scope on it, I shot it DA most of the time and only switched to SA when I was shooting it with the iron sights.

Good gun .. kinda wish I still had it. 30 years of water under that bridge though.

(Uh, do you have trouble getting boxes of Nosler bullets open?)

You thought wrong. Redhawks come either with or without rings. Super Redhawks, other than the Alaskan model, all have ring mounts. The Redhawks with rings are mounted on the barrel, Super Redhawks have the scope mounts back over the action and forward extension of the frame. Redhawks have a single spring design where both hammer and trigger operate from the same spring .. pretty unique to Ruger. The Super Redhawk is, internally, basically an oversized GP100 with conventional 2-spring design.

Etc.

I prefer the Redhawk.
